Doing the Superman slide across the grass with a pole and a ditch in play--that had to be terrifying.

I throw out there even though one data point that giving the opportunity to split the field, even in wet weather, there were fewer accidents than previous early stage races in previous years. Just my observation.

edit WHOOPS just read through today post. strike what I said kinda.

The good news is the aero Madone really flew higher and faster than the rest of the frames in the scrum. It was real easy to see in its yellow splendor flying 20+ feet through the air.

Proof positive that it is better.

Froome should pass on yellow tomorrow as Fabian didn't have a fighting chance.

Well, you know what they say. The yellow jersey, it gives you wings.

Good thing that pole was there to stop them, otherwise they'd have slid all the way to the Mur de Huy.

My big crash prediction has come to fruition. Is Thibaut Pinot winning yet?

In case you didn't notice, the Van Bros. at BMC are in 3rd and 5th.

See now, I was thinking on a Madone, all those little trap doors popped out much like Buzz Lightyear's wings and the bike (with rider aboard) took flight over top of the impending doom, gliding to safety on the other side of the road.

Would you say that $250-300K worth of bikes and related gear were sacrificed today?

    Carbon gets recycled.

    (see what I did there?)

Pretty crap stage today. FWIIW Glad they neutralized the race twice. If nothing it gathers respect from everyone involved for sportsmanship. Don't hate me, I believe they did it right.

I was dismayed to see the first action of the mechanic was to take a helmet that obviously had damage from impact and fix it to get the rider back on the bike. As a trained ski patroller that really bothered me; while I know these are pros, it seems that some standard of care to prevent further injury would be appropriate. Faboo back on the bike in a second event with fractured vertebrae, other riders I'm sure will be DNS tomorrow. Do we have to see someone die from being put/allowed on the bike with high risk injuries? Is it all about the race?

Mine too, a couple of posts up. If you saw Flèche , you knew this was going to be bad. The big crash likely saved us 3 crashes down the road.

Finally caught up on today's stage, kinda made me sad....tough to see such a brutal crash. Made what was a great finish feel kinda lacking. All that said, the big favorites now have up to 2:00 minutes between them so that's going to force some fireworks in the mountains.

It was pretty brutal and the FDJ riders was hit very hard from the following scrum just after he cam to a stop. I've read he is in a coma in hospital. While I don't know him it's hard to care about the rest of the race knowing he's that bad off. It's definitely a sport of mm.

well then I hope you didn't see the part where one of the attendants was taking a guy with obvious facial/head injuries and propping his head up on a helmet...I don't know if it is from going through a high-speed crash myself in a race last season, but I found watching the whole thing rather sickening. What have things come to? 4th tier dirt track open wheel bandit racers in the mid-west seem to have a better chance at surviving their sport unscathed than a TDF rider.
