He was probably elated that he was actually on the bike and not on the ground ala the equivalent stage in 2014.

But, he's no Ayrton Senna and I think you are paying Froome a compliment that he doesn't deserve. Senna had sublime skills and recklessness in equal measure. A guy who is fixated on what his power meter is telling him and reckless are two different things I think.

This aside, hats off to Froome. Everyone else has lost time over the first week in circumstances where it was predicated that Froome may struggle.

Bad news about Basso. Not your average rest day press conference.

    Update Re: Eurosport

They now have an option to use a "light version" of their player. If you hover the cursor over the left corner of the player, the control options appear and the right most option (looks like a little sliding switch) is the one for changing to the light player version. I have found it to be significantly smoother than the "heavy" version they rolled out just before the Tour started. And I don't really see any image quality difference.

Also due to the way the player detects the time, it misreads what the clock time is for your viewing period and gives you a schedule of what is playing live that is not correct. The first channel may show another sport, but during the TdF programming, it is almost always the TdF broadcast with the two Eurosport presenters. The selection that says TdF Stage X: Here to There is very often a video only without presenters.

Have you done much road riding with guys that primarily ride mountain bikes? I have and their road riding ability usually leaves a lot to be desired. They tend to be super uncomfortable in a group, let big gaps open up, and are surprisingly timid on descents.

    It really depends.

There are riders that choosed MTB as a discipline because you are mostly on your own and do not have to deal with a pack and traffic. They are often the very same who are not especially good at descending regardless of the surface (off or on roads).

Others like MTB for the thrills and will be equally good on the road and off the road.

And there are all those shades in the middle.

I was talking about picking a line through the cobbles, not riding in a group.

Have to confess, my following the "sport" nowadays is limited to looking to see a printed summary.

I can't bring myself to watch it, they have killed it for me.

my interest just tanked. Froome's not pretty on the bike, i don't recall seeing Contador struggle like he did on that last climb (one shot from the feed I was watching...), and Porte finished 2nd.

I'm hoping Nibali pulls another "transformation" like he did at the Giro to make me interested again.

Contador I can understand. But Nibali? Quintana? Maybe those guys were resting on their laurels in the off-season. There are certainly well known stories of riders who find their first off-season after a big tour win clustered with so many obligations they lose the training depth they had when they were (slightly) more anonymous in the previous year. And teams - Sky definitely has the strongest team and a big part of this was the Sky team just totally burying everyone on the road for kilometer after kilometer. So when Froome took off 5km from the top, he had that lip of tough riding and then slightly less grade all the way into the finish. Meanwhile half his rivals were at or below the point where he attacked. Only Quintana stayed reasonably close.

But the ride from Richie Porte was off the fucking hook!

It's hard to watch something like that stage without "oh no, here we go again" entering one's mind. But much as I loathe watching Froome ride (I'm sure he's a nice enough chap, he just bores me to tears), I'm going to suspend my disbelief as long as I can. I'm cheering for other riders, but if he's the strongest, so be it. Thankfully that's not enough to win; he still has to negotiate some pretty dicey descents in the next week and a half, and since he closely resembles a monkey fucking a football anytime he's above 25mph maybe some of the better handlers can attack him where he's weak. But I want him to lose his jersey to a braver, faster, better rider - not to a lab result.

Call me Fox Mulder. I want to believe.

I'm kinda disappointed that Teklehaimanot lost the climber's jersey. Woulda loved to see him keep it all the way to Paris.

The amazing thing is that after Froome, the next 6 or 7 riders are very closely bunched. Nobody should give up on anyone yet even though right now Froome has the race in his hand. Anything could happen. I mean Contador blows up and loses nearly 3 minutes but is only 1:15 or so out of 2nd overall. There's a lot of race to go. Van Garderen is looking solid. Not explosive, but he's soldiering on and holds 2nd place nicely.
