Default Talk to me (about) bRitches

What are people wearing on their legs for winter mountain and fat biking?

I'm pretty squared away when it comes to snow: thermal long-johns and a pair of hard shell mountaineering pants from long ago do the trick. When it's just plain cold, however, I can't seem to find a good combination of warmth and convenience.

I have some Assos bib tights (both lined and unlined) that I wear under some baggie shorts so as to not scare the hikers plus whatever layering I'm running up top. The problem is that it is super inconvenient to manage bibs under a couple of insulating tops, particularly when nature calls. And I'm not too thrilled about wearing $$ tights when rolling around in the woods where things poke and snag you.

Anyone have a better ensemble? How about just long johns under shorts; do they hold up well?

Whatever you do, just remember “cotton kills” when it comes to dressing for freezing weather.

I generally wear two kinds of pants in the winter for fat biking.

run-of-the-mill tech hiking pants. My favorite pair being the Black Diamond Alpine Softshell https://www.blackdiamondequipment.co....html#start=11

When it is super cold I wear a pair of Mammut Tatramar insulated pants. Access Denied . I REALLY like these fat biking since they have side vents and an integrated gaiter.

I sometimes will wear a pair of light weight 3/4 polypro knickers underneath my lightweight pants if it is sort of an inbetween day.

Cheap performance tights (no pad), they are over 20 yrs old, over a good pair of bibs and topped by mountain biking over shorts to hid the holes in the crotch. This combo even on windy days, will keep my lower half warm down to 20F at least for a 1.5 hrs.

Could not even imagine wearing an insulated pants/tights - both for movement and overheating, but those Mammut are a good looking pant.

I got these last week. Was out for 3 hours on Sunday night when it was under 20, with a multi-mile descent, and they were toasty, although my metabolism does run warm. I got the tall size but they make regular too.

I own two pairs of pants for the winter which dual for my fat bike expeditions. One lighterweight highly breathable for not so cold days and then another set when I need to be in an impenetrable womb.

Arcteryx Beta SL. This is pretty much what I wear 99% of the time. Lightweight. Highly breathable (super important as I tend to run a bit hot). Totally waterproof.

Patagonia Powder Bowl pants. These are for when the weather is really harsh and I need alot of protection. They dual as my snowboard pants/around the house clearing snow snow-pants.

If I could only keep one set thought, the Arcteryx Beta SL's are what I'd choose. They're sufficient for all the above activities but when layered up with additional garments underneath, they're really a great set of pants.

Me and Swrve don’t get along. My hips and gut are a bit too swervy. But I agree that those pants are great, it just that I couldn’t get them past my hips.

I normally wear some XC ski pants if its cold. I'll add some leg warmers if its really cold. Normal thermal tights or leg warmers and thermal bibs if it is much above 20F.

    Bob-

Amfib Elite Tights...got them for road but they work great for fat biking....and other woods activity. Sunrise Tri on the south shore of the island is having them in their Friday sprint sale....click on this then click on the sale.

Friday Sprint Sale - Massapequa Bike Shop - West Babylon Triathlon

If you do it through the sprint sale link they are 110 bucks until this evening...I use them in Canada where it is a tad colder than NY...

I got these for Christmas. Only one ride, but they were great in the mid-20s with just bibs and leg warmers underneath. Single digits will require a heavier duty layer though. Will update after I've used them for awhile.

Just got some of these cheap pants off Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

One ride at 24* with bibs underneath for padding and plenty warm without excess sweating. Seem to be made pretty well. Decent and cheap...time will tell how they hold up.
