Default SS gearing/ --> elliptical chainring advice

OK, my Cielo went away for a bit to get a refresh and when it gets back I'm building it up with some updates. On my local trails when I'm feeling fresh, I currently feel pretty spun out on my current gearing (34x20) and my faster geared friends start to disappear ahead. I got an 18t cog to go a bit steeper on the new build.

Meanwhile, though, I've been following all the intel on Wolftooth elliptical chainrings (that one blog post from Kris, anyone?) and thinking I want to go in that direction. People talk about it feeling like a given chainring size larger on the long side and a given chainring smaller on the short side. I was thinking go strong and stick with a 34t elliptical up front with my fresh 18t cog and wait for my legs to catch up. Or does this sound like too much of a jump? Trying not to overhtink, but hey. It's the internet.

Think about what kind of chain tension device you're going to add along with that elliptical CR... If your frame doesn't have a RD hanger, then you may be SOL.

I really like an oval ring, especially on singlespeed. I would stick with your same size chainring. They aren't huge jumps. For the cog, an 18 or 19 is probably right. I like to have a few cogs around to experiment. And usually get some relatively cheaper cogs to play around and then get a nice one when you know exactly what gear you want.

Don't understand this comment, sounds like he already has a singlespeed frame or tensioning device. Elliptical CRs work just fine in singlespeeds.

Yep, have rocker dropouts that can accommodate lots of inserts. Dave, you mean to accommodate differing tension on chain like with a chain tensioner? I was under the impression that the difference was minute enough that it didn't matter.

No chain tensioner needed for SS running an elliptical ring. Also, I've got purple endless cogs from 16-22... you never know where you're gonna wanna go.

MoutainBikeRadio did a podcast with the Wolftooth guys specifically on the oval. it's worth a listen.

I've not ridden an oval ring. But the step from a 20T to an 18T is pretty big IMO. I'd try a 19T first if you change rear cogs.

I used a 32x18 for a while in Augusta (all rides less than 100ft/mile average). Then tried a 19T cog and liked it a lot more, yes, I'd get spun out a bit more, but on long rides it was great as I felt better longer.

When I went up to TN for the Black Bear Rampage (4000ft/40 miles) I put a 20T on the back. For the Snake Creek Gap (5800ft/32 miles) I used a 21T.

I'd start out with the 20 out back like you've got now, and the 34 oval ring.

    See how that feels.

If you want the bigger gear, throw on the 18...
