    Default New saddle needed.

I've been out of mountain biking for decades but I've got this new one to build up when Garro gets back from fishing. All of my road bikes have SSM Regal saddles and I have a new one on the shelf. The gravel bike has a Regal and I've put thousands of miles on it, but I'm thinking something more MTB specific for the new bike. Given that my ass fits a Regal (150mm), does anyone have a recommendation in a WTB or similar? Not interested in Ti or composite rails, a fat guy has to know his limitations.

I'll spend your money. I ride Fizik Arrione for road and their Gobi for Mtn. bike. We are both King sized so this is a best guess.

Garro will say the WTB Silverado (though only 142 width). Britishbane says embrace the hammock - aliante all the time on every bike forever (the old version).

Check out the Specialized Henge in the 155 width.

    Me, too, and here's why...

Lots of times you need to get your ass off and behind the saddle, so a narrower saddle, for me, allows it to pass between my legs to get way back over the rear tire for steep tech, etc.

I tried a WTB Devo on my mtb once, which I like on a road bike, but found I just couldn't get behind it as easily.

I'm with Bill on the Regal for road, but not mountain. That unpadded and fairly sharp rear edge is very unforgiving if you come down on it wrong. That is not just a theory.

I use the San Marco Strada or Titanio 200 on MTB's, but these are long out of production.

+1 on Speedy's recommendation to visit the Special__ed store, if only for their return policy.

    Happy landings, TH

I'm going to try a WTB Volt Race in 150. Regals are 149-150, we'll see. Steve is out until mid May and the drivetrain, fork, wheels, and headset are in his shop about two hours away. I've got a box of Race Face stuff to do the remainder of the build. The frame arrived at my house yesterday, it's incredible. Dark Matter hit it out of the park.

Try a Specialized Power in a large size. 155 or even 168.
    Or a large size Ergon.

99% of people who need a wider saddle respond well to those.

For me and the place that I work, Specialized saddles have almost totally killed Fizik, Selle Italia, San Marco and Prologo.

The Regal Road/Silverado MTB combination has worked for my backside for years.

Specialized Henge or Phenom; both have been kind to me for mountain biking.

Somewhat less drop on the bars so a little more upright. In and out of the saddle all the time, not just the occasional climb or stretch. Enough padding to take off the sting when it inevitably gets bounced up into your region by a root.

In the end it isn't all that different and a lot of good MTB saddles are great for casual riding on the road. I'm liking the WTB Volt off road.

My bike came with a Volt and 2+ years in I have never really thought about changing it...use a Speesh Romin on the road bike and even a Romin on my fat bike but the Volt works well on the trail bike.

I went with the Volt in 150 on the green Coconino. I have mostly WTB Pures on the other bikes, but the Volt has worked out well so far.

I'd say run the SSM unless it hangs you up on the descents.

As much as I hate to say it, the Spec Phenom is now my go to saddle on road and mtb. The flatter platform and larger cutout, along with just the right amount of padding is a perfect fit. My Pegoretti is the last hold out with a Selle Italia, but having just pushed that bike back into rotation, I'm not loving that Selle at all anymore.

As a man, I am not afraid to say that I do pretty well with Fizik Vesta saddle. It is long enough to have fore and aft movement for control, and fits me well with just right amount of firmness. My road and rando bikes have Berthoud Aravis saddles.

Update: I just checked Fizik website and looks like they don't make Vesta anymore. I am glad I have three Vesta saddles stashed away...

It will probably sound crazy, but always take the biggest seats I can find in the store. No, not fat, but I feel so comfortable. I can not ride on small seats or narrow ones, from them everything starts to hurt and rub me.

The WTB Volt in 150mm was an ass-hatchet. And it creaked. I had an old Fizik Nisene from the 90's sitting on the shelf, I installed that and tried it out yesterday. Comfy and no creaking. I stopped once to adjust the angle and good to go. Now I need to shim the bottom bracket over to the NDS a few mm to fix the chainline.
