Default Mechanical vs. Hydraulic Disc Content/ Poll

    1) Is there a world in which top-end mechanical disc brakes ( say, Paul Klampers, if you drink the single-side actuation kool-aid) are as good or better than the industry standard hydro disc brakes (for argument's sake Shimano M8000)?

    a) Yes.

    b) No way, Jose.

    2) What kind of rider lives in that world, i.e. what kind of bike & what kind of trails does (s)he ride in said world?

LOL, Dustin. C'mon play along: science, philosophy, theology, literature, the liberal arts, opinions on bike forums, etc., these things are about conforming the mind to reality. No ideology from me, simply entertaining the possibilities of the horses on the courses.

There are certainly use cases where I might choose mechanical disc brakes - when cost, low maintenance, ability to service quickly or remotely start to become high priorities, they aren't bad. I mean, they do stop. But no, they never feel near as good as hydros.

I rode BB7s for several years and Spyres on a CX bike for a while. They worked fine for my purposes, but both bikes are hydros now. SLX on the mtb and Hylex on the CX bike. Both work much better and are less maintenance hassle than cable brakes. I would be fine with some good cable brakes though.

I read somewhere that some people use different pads on the same caliper for brakes that actuate only one piston- maybe metallic pads on the inside and resin on the outside. Does that make any sense?

    What about cable-actuated hydraulics?

    1) No. Hydraulics are much more powerful.
    2) Rode Porcupine Rim/Whole Enchilada in Moab. One bike with XT and one with BB7. XT was better. However, the bb7 was very very good. Set up with huge 205mm rotor front 185mm rear. Compressionlsss housing cut square. Action was light and I could one finger it in most spots.

While I concede hydraulics work better, and less hassle of maintenance. On my next bike, I am going Klampers with 205 meat slicers. May be the retrogrouch side coming out but despite the performance, I just like how some things feel better. I know CF is lighter and faster, but all my bikes are steel. Gears are way more efficient but my favorite bike is a SS. They just feel better to me. Rest of the build: Surly bolt on rear hub, WI freewheel, square taper cranks (Middleburn!), and 1.125” HT!!! This will take place of my “modern” SS.

You guys sounds like an old married couple.

OK, everyone's talking about BB7s... are those the top mechs? Can we control the variable? I assumed Pauls were king because they cost the most. :)

I have both BB7's and Klampers on two bikes back to back and the BB's grab better but the Pauls feel better.

A couple times a year I need to clean out dead grass from the Pauls as it gets stuck in the top of the mech.

They work well / best with Paul levers

Easy to adjust, look cool, and the pads are really slick to remove, much easier then the BB's in that aspect.

BB's work & work, I have one set with 14 years on them that are missing all the rubber seals and just has exposed springs and it works fine.

M8000's, one finger control on steep rocky stuff. The best use I've seen for cable-actuated hydraulics is for coupled bikes, especially tandems. I'm pretty recent to hydraulic disc, but Shimano is so easy and reliable. Mineral>DOT.

Klampers on the Ahearne, 8000 hydros on the Lynskey.

Love the Klampers...but overall definitely not as "good" but pretty awesome anyway.
