Default Hardtail Mountain bike under $1000

I know for under a $1000 it hard to get a great bike but I just Need one that can hold is own on moderate trail use and everyday riding. So if know of any good sub 1000 bikes post them up please..
    Thanks

If you're looking for a VS type bike, i.e. a handbuilt, metal sled, second/third hand on the classifieds here or across the hall (Paceline) is the way. There's tons of Giants, Treks, and Specializedses on Pinkbike, too. Good luck finding something. Bikes are very good these days and you won't go wrong - tons of out of date handbuilts lying around in people's garages and people keen to sell, I find. It should be easy to find hydraulic discs, a mid-range to nice Fox or Rockshox sus fork, and decent shifting at your pricepoint if you look secondhand and are willing to ride something several years old (which people will tell you is centuries old in terms of geometry). There aren't too many new $1K bikes I would recommend (I'm sure there are some bargains out there), but for me it's as much about the thrill of the chase vs. walking into the bike store.

I just bought a Trek Roscoe 7. It's a LOT of bike for $1300. Don't know if you can strech $300 more, but boy is is a nice bike and fun.

Go used. I would look from something like a Specialized Chisel. Many go for that pricepoint and are very nice.

    Go used or NOS.
This winter I picked up a new 2014 Kona Explosif for $1200 and its probably my most fun bike right now.

This was online from Centre City Cycles but there’s probably dozens of similar places out there.
