Default Fork Decisions: RockShox Ultimate Thoughts?

Iím planning to purchase a 120 fork and have always ridden Fox but before I pull the trigger, thought I would call on the wisdom of VSalon if there are better options, namely the new RockShox Ultimate. Itís light but doesnít have much adjustability. That said, the marketing dribble raves about how well it rides out of the box. Any real world experience/opinions? Worth a try or stick to the tried and true Fox Factory SC?

I have a pre-step cast Fox and no complaints, but boy oh boy is the SID SL tempting. I would want that slightly over the current Fox SC based on one report I heard in some drainhole on the internet somewhere that Fox SCs are flexier, but like you, real world feedback would be nice.

I have some pretty burly riders on Fox Stepcast 34's and not one of them has mentioned them being "flexy".

I've really been impressed with Fox's product and technical support these past few seasons personally. They're one of my trusted OE partners for sure.

Are you looking at the new SID Ultimate? It definitely look is pretty sweet and I’ll probably be using on an upcoming “downcountry” rig. *I realize some folks hate that term, but it seems to fit pretty well.*

Been riding a Lyrik RCT3 on my Trek Remedy and have been very pleased. No complaints as compared to equivalent Fox forks.

Yes, looking at the SID Ultimate. My Santa Cruz Blur is going in that same direction, a light-ish fast bike but it could do with a 120 fork versus it’s current Fox 32 100mm. I don’t have any complaints with the Fox forks I’ve had, I don’t think the current 32 SC is flexy and never had an issue with 34s in the past. Just curious if there’s something else out there worth trying out.

Sounds like a winner. I considered that exact bike and configuration. I had the opportunity to get on the list for a '21 Specialized Epic Evo and decided to give that a shot.

The EVO doesn’t have the Brain correct? That should be a fun ride! Right now I’m leaning towards the Rockshox just to try something new.

Fox is a very good and trustworthy company in the bike industry.
If you’re looking for another, check out the Cane Creek Helm. I’ve been riding one for several weeks and it is perfect.

Correct, the new EVO is sans-brain.

As intriguing as the Rockshox is, found a deal on a new Fox 34 SC that was ~$150 less and I know is a proven fork. Stayed conservative and pulled the trigger on the Fox.

Sweet. I looks forward to hearing how the Blur does with 120mm fork. Which offset did you get?

That was the hard part...ultimately went with the 44 since that’s what Santa Cruz recommends. If it feels too slow, might swap for a 51.

Sounds right. Looks like will give you a 68* HTA, and 95mm of trail. Should be a hoot to ride!

My 100 mm Fox is 7 years old and going strong. Really interested in the 34 SC 120 mm / 44 mm though.
Although, boost would mean a new front hub and lacing too.
Just for the amazing durability of my old Fox I would like to stay with them.
And wondering if I shouldn't just keep riding the current fork or maybe rebuild it.
Please give a ride report and persuade me.

Look forward to your report on that bike...thinking about the cheaper Comp version of it.

I'm going with an Expert but upgrading the fork to the SID Ultimate. The Comp looks well spec'd too.

Nice. I'm just shopping in my head right now...Ripley, DV9, Epic Evo, WaltWorks hardtail, and who knows what else. Need to finally get out and test something.

Great consideration set. The Ripley was on my too, but in the end was too close to my Remedy in weight. The EVO with an SID Ultimate should come in just shy of 25 lbs.
