I was half asleep most of the time but I'm pretty sure I have been told in school that steel is an an alloy of mainly iron and carbon and read later that chromium, molybdenium and/or vanadium were also part of the steel alloy used in bicycle frames.
OK - great, thanks for the metallurgy lesson. But I think we all know what the layman means when they say they are looking for an alloy bike. Furthermore, the OP specifically said they were looking for an affordable bike. Probably not custom....

I like custom bikes as much as the next guy, and have had a few. But sometimes I think members here are discounting how nice some off the shelf bikes really are. It seems there is a belief that custom is always better or preferred. I don't believe that to be true, especially with mountain bikes.

Thanks Thomas the Alma has always given me mtb wood. I love this rigid beast below too. I'll definitely keep an eye on Orbea and look up Commencal.

Find a used Canfield Yelli Screamy... or if you are a small or medium frame... buy one new before they gone. SHOP YELLI SCREAMY | Canfield Brothers Online Store

Thankfully I nabbed one of them before they sold out of larges.

Roadies are no fun in the woods anyway... they always leave me on the gravel climbs and then I run up their butts on the DH's.

i would select a bike on geometry first what its made out of is secondary, must sound like a dickhead now but what i mean to say is that that carbon orbea, an xc racer but suit better than a am alloy kona or salsa.
i loved my superfly's if it wasnt for the poor executing of the construction i had three warranty replacements plus a repair done before i made my own out out iron (-: but as far as a race bike goes i love the low and long superfly.
that orbeo looks super hot. have fun picking one ! (-:
    Thank, mick van aar

You get a lot of bike for the scratch, and it looks like an XC racer's affordable dream.
My Superfly rides really nicely, but if I had to do it over, I'd get the SS version with the swappable dropouts. That way, one frame can do both SS AND geared wheels.
