I pop into the forum after a long absence... and see the expected announcement... posted just moments ago. So the timing is a sign of good karma. And of course I will make my biannual pilgrimage to the show, armed with my (now ancient) Nikon D300. I actually am going in with very low expectations for photography - hoping for just one or two decent images for my annual calendar. I do expect to have fun (even if I don't drink beer).

I'll be there. Dragging a friend along this time. And my wife may be attending as well (for the beer).

Iíve posted my photos from Saturday in an online gallery: 2014 Oregon Handmade Bicycle Show

As usual, the extremely dim lighting made things tough, and my ancient Nikon D300 struggles in the dark. This forces a very shallow depth-of-field. I like shallow depth of field Ė but maybe not quite so much on these sorts of macros. The key is composition and color, anyway. (And even the color was tough to figure under diverse artificial lighting.) I think most of you are used to my photographic style, so there arenít going to be any surprises in this batch. Photos from previous shows are in galleries in the Bicycle Events folder.

And as always, I posted notes in a Blog Entry.

Amy -- I think you were standing right next to me several times, trying to get the perfect angle. (Saturday about 1 o'clock or so?) Sorry if I got in your way...

I don't recall anyone being in my way... mostly I'm just worried about being in other peoples' way... or keeping an exhibitor from doing real business. So, no, you weren't in the way, David! Yes, I was photographing between 12:30 and 3:30 on Saturday - not continuously, of course.

I went today (Sunday). Had a nice time. Highlights for me included:
    • Winter Bicycles, especially that mint green road bike with red accents that was in FNL recently
    • The Dinucci in the UBI booth, wow!
    • That Igleheart fatbike fork
    • Shooting the sh*t with Andy Newlands. Super great guy.

It all made me pretty excited to get back in the shop. It'll be a little while longer though. Anyway, it was a fun event!

Wow. Quiet. And no thread (that I can find) for OHBS 2015. So I'm posting in this old thread.

Iíve posted my photos from Saturday (Oct 3, 2015) in an online gallery: 2015 Oregon Handmade Bicycle Show

As always, the lighting was terrible, BUT I did have more control with my new camera (Nikon D810) and new lens (micro-Nikkor AF-S 105mm f/2.8G VR)... and this year I tried using a monopod... which maybe helped a little. Still, this was the smallest published set of photos I've done for any show. I'm not sure what it was... maybe the bicycle setups didn't catch my eye just right... or the lighting was unattractive... and it felt like like there were fewer really good subjects/scenes this year. Or perhaps I've just been doing the same thing for too long. My Bicycle As Art photos tend to look all the same, anyway. The new camera/lens combo did let me come away with fewer rejects. But I was a lot less prolific this year (not that I publish that many photos in any year).

Photos from previous shows are in my Portland Bicycle Events folder.

And as always, I posted notes in a Blog Entry.

Andy, if you're reading this... I tried emailing links to you, but the message bounced back to me saying that your mailbox is full.

Amy, your attention and work is very appreciated. You definitely have a good eye for detail, and watching you patiently wait for the light to hit just right, your careful set-up... The cars is very evident. Thank you for being there and putting us in the best light.

Awwww! Thanks, David! I do this for fun, and I love coming every year to see all the wonderful work you guys do.

Sorry my photos of your little yellow rider didn't turn out; it was a cute little frame!
