Default Want to Know - Best Floor Pump Valve Head

Tired of the head on my otherwise good Nashbar pump.

What's great and what's really good that doesn't cost a bunch.

    Presta only.

    THanks.

    Topeak twin-head replacement kit >> https://www.topeak.com/us/en/product...AD-UPGRADE-KIT

Plan "B" is any old school Silca chuck and a handful of replacement gaskets. At some point, probably never, I'll get tired of my old school Silca pumps and do the above.

Boom. Those are amazing. I've been using a Hozan (?) version for many years. Small learning curve. Great suggestion.

This is what I used on my pump. Love it. Everyone else hates it, because they don't understand how it works.

Have Hirame pump heads fallen out of favor?

I think the Hirami chuck and all its similars are probably great for 120psi, but very few people are using that kind of pressure these days. Plus the locking lever design isn't great when dealing with some factory wheels and bladed spokes.

That Topeak TwinHead TT linked to is basically the same operating principle for $26.95. With a hose. I've had my Topeak pump for a long time. No problems.

While I am complaining, Silca chucks should look like this:

    Not like this:

    to thread into this:

What is the issue with sliding a barbed end into the hose and fixing it with a clamp? Especially if you are doing it anyway with the schraeder fitting?

I have one of the Silca versions and the same thing happens. I love it. My friends can't figure it out.

Thanks for the thoughts. That Topeak looks a lot like the one I'm getting tired of.
The Soma Tanaka looks great. Like the idea of not spending big money on this thing but may spring for the Hirame on the basis that I won't have to think about it again.

That Topeak does not have the sex appeal of the Japanese jobs however it is a quality piece. Don't be fooled by the looks.

Realistically, for an avid cyclist, other than the bike itself, the floor pump is probably the most used piece of gear, so it definitely makes sense to have something that doesnt piss you off every time you use it.

Those japanese pump heads look nice but I like being able to help my neighbors and I have kids so I have to deal with schrader valves sometimes. And I hate those adapters.

My SKS dual head pump head works fine, provided you replace the gommets once in a while.

The variable valve which adjusts for valve width (threads or no threads etc.) is probably the issue. That creature feature is not present in any other pump head design I'm aware of.
When I was running training camps I'd bring a Silca pump and Bob's your uncle. The one time I had a second pump with this head, it was never used.

Should we have to think about how to pump up a friggin' tyre? Well yes, yes we should ;)

Another Hirame user here. Love it.

The only thing I noticed is that it doesn't seem to play very well with Continental valve stems. Has anyone else experienced this? It's most likely user error, but I've been wondering about it for a little while. (I have an entire carton of Conti inner tubes in the cellar, and they are used for my daughter's and wife's bikes...)

They generally jam the head onto the valve rather than lightly inserting the valve and letting the lever compress the gasket for the seal. The issue isn't getting it on so much as it's getting the head back off. Especially with threaded valve stems.

I have a box of Continental tubes. Each new one I use, I remove the valve core, clean it up, put a dot of blue Loctite on the threads, re-insert and tighten but good. Something about their valves, but this little two-step seems to get them going right-way.

Yes, removing one with nearby bladed spokes takes skin off knuckles if you've over-tightened the gasket.

Like TT says, the Topeak isn't glamorous but it works. Even worn and battered, it still gets 90psi in a tire, no problem. That's 15-20psi more than most people use these days, right? Plus you can pump up your car tires. Or just get an old Silca track pump and re-gasket it with new stuff if you are still doing 120psi in 19mm tires.
