Looking for marginal gains--what standard length road rim brake (39 to 49mm) has the best tire clearance? Ultegra? Dura Ace? TRP?

eebrakes provide clearance for 32mm tires on a non- “standard” frameset, eg a custom built for maximum extension of the brake pads.

Not sure about the "best" but I've found SRAM Rival to have very good clearance, especially when it comes to the height of the tire. This may be model-year dependent, so look at them carefully. EE gives good clearance, but, if you are looking for clearance so you can ride in mud, I've found them to perform poorly. All that open space gets filled with mud and they jam.

Compared to a Mavic SSC caliper, a newer generation Shimano caliper (5800, 6800, etc.) increased clearance from about 2mm to 5mm over a 30mm tyre. Brake pads have about 3mm to the bottom of the slots.

Let me know if you want to sell the SSCs, @Chooey!

My DA 7900 calipers have lots of clearance. On my road frames, this brake caliper is nowhere near the limiting factor for tire clearance; it is either the fork crown or the chainstays next to the tire. It might be worth looking at Shimano calipers from that series.

Personally, I swapped out some pretty Campagnolo 9s calipers for DA 7900 in order to clear a 30 mm tire for mixed surface riding. I haven't gone back since.

And isn't it nice to have real quick releases/rim width fine tuning?

Do the newer Campagnolo brakes in the 12 speed groups actually have less clearance than the previous brakes in the 11 speed groups? Seems like width might be more but arch appears lower(?)

current shimano brakes have a ton of predictable clearance with the rigid back plate. what you see is what you get- no arm reducing clearance under braking. You don't get to fine tune the brake release, but there are other ways to deal with that

they also work great with fenders for the same reason

Not less, but not more either.

There’s a trick to the 12v brakes that creates a bit more room using the brake centre adjuster.

I went with the Shimano 8000's--my wife's forthcoming Pocket Rocket will have excellent braking and @30mm tire clearance.
