Default my Shimano 1 x 11 with a clutch conversion

Am new to the world of road / CX so no idea if this something that anyone is interested in, or even done before? I wanted Shimano discs, and 11 speed and a super wide ratio cassette, alas such a set up doesn't exist.

10sp shimano MTB mechs have a larger pull ratio than road 11sp, and a Saint mech in particular has a very long arm where the cable pull attachment point is, so plenty of room to re-position and achieve the correct cable pull. Anyway, after a fair bit of measuring, and head scratching i went for it. All i did was drill a 1.2mm hole so i could thread the cable through the "arm" of the saint mech, then simply use the existing cable clamp, but coming at it from the rear (oo er!!!) Also cos i wanted to use a 10-42 cassette i had to use a Goat-link to extend the reach of the rear mech. used with Shimano RS685 levers.

Anyway, it works a charm, perfect crisp shifting up and down the block. Happy as Larry!!

Now this is the sort of madness I come here to see. Bravo! Looks great and apparently functions nicely as well. Please post a tutorial.

    Great stuff!
Would be interesting to know what's the distance of the cable entry from the pivot.

However, I see a bit too much bending of the wire in that area, which would eventually lead to cable failure. Best to flare generously the entry point for the wire, and maybe using a PVC pipe. Is not strange that new Shimano road RD's do have that plastic pipe where the wire does exit to meet the fixing bolt: look at the angle that wire has

    Great job.

How do you came up with the right distance ? Maths or trial & errors ? I see another hole.

    Feel free to share pictures.

The position was part maths, part measuring. I placed a cable through the mech and against my intended hole centre, then cycled mech through it's range of travel to check the amount of cable moved, matched up to the amount of cable pull the shifters gave me. The 11sp shifter gives 2.7mm cable per gear, where as the 10sp mech requires 3.4mm (on a 10sp cassette). Sram and Shimano 11 speed MTB both have the same pitch of cogs in the cassette (i was wanting either 11-36 or 10-42) so i based all my calcs around these cassettes. I'm uncertain if road 11sp uses the same pitch, i haven't had access to one to measure it.

Unfortunately yes there is indeed 2 holes in my mech, i had a brain fart when marking out my hole position. ARGHHHHHHH!!!

Somehow the pictures make the angle of the cable look more extreme than it really is. And there aren't any sharp edges which the cable can rub against. The hole going through the mech arm has a chamfered entry so again no extra cause for concern.

For those of us (me) math challenged, can you say how far from pinch bolt the hole was drilled? I have a Kona Sutra LTD frame I'm building up that I'd love to have a clutched rear derailleur on. Thanks!

    First, this is awesome. Thanks.
I cant read the red either. Red green color blind.
On the derailleur, do you think any dynasys shimano would have the same dimensions on the fixing bolt arm?

    14mm.

I like this ghetto fix that isn't really that ghetto. This is the stuff I come here for as well.

I think this is a better way of measuring the correct distance, it now works back from the centre of the pivot. Am unsure about other Dynasys mechs, but i have today tried it on a 10sp Zee mech, and it also works perfectly. I'm hoping that somebody elses uses it? Surely it will be good for CycloCross, they must be crying out for a decent clutched mech??

Anyway to re-iterate for both Saint and Zee mechs,
20mm from centre of pivot, and i drilled a 1.2mm hole with a good 0.5mm chamfer.
