J-tek have been making the Model 8 for quite a while which does the same thing. I have no experience with the Model 8 but their other models always worked well when I used them.

Can anyone confirm from experience that this setup, say, with an XT RD will or will not work with an 11-40 cassette?

It should (using long cage for double-ring) according to Lindarets Tanpan's compatibility chart:

Using a Wolftooth / Lindarets goatlink would improve the precision and smoothness of the shifting though.

Nearly a year in, still shifting like a good'un :-)

Very interesting post which motivated me to register to this forum.

I am currently in the building process of my next bike and after reading all your posts it helped me to find an alternative to SRAM as it is pretty expensive here in Japan.
Thinking of assembling a 1x11 group with a XT Rear Derailleur (RD-M786-GS) paired with a "Tanpan SH11" to make it work smoothly with the Shimano R685 11s shifters.
I will probably fit a 11-32 cassette 11 speed and a 38T chainring from one of those nice CNC genius out there.

Was thinking of the Truvativ Descendant GXP which is fairly cheap and lightweight, only concern is the chainline given as 49mm.
Compared with 43.5mm of the road crankset like the Shimano 105.

Should I care about this given than my rear wheel is on a 142mm width axle?
    How chainline affect 1x11 ?

    Thanks for any insights

For an inexpensive drivetrain I'd go with the Sram S350-1 crankset which is also known as the Sram Apex 1 crankset. It is optimized for 135/142mm chainlines, would have a narrower q-factor.

The Truvativ descendant is an MTB crank with a wider q-factor. I'd rather chose an SLX crankset to complete with the rest of the group in this case.

    Thank you Thomas,

    I forgot about Q-factor.

Now that there's an Ultegra 11-34 11sp cassette that (apparently) fits on 10sp hubs, I'm ready to give this a go. Sounds like a great CX setup.

Very interesting thread, thanks for sharing! Has anybody ever tried to combine Campagnolo shifters with a mtb cassette? Thinking about a gravel bike with Campa.

Meaning it can't work? No cassette out there that would have cogs spaced in such a way that a medium-range Campa derailleur on a Goat Link would function?

I'm sure that would work. Infact, I use a similar setup with Shimano and a huge SunRace cassette. The biggest hurdle is getting the rear mech upper jockey to work well with the cassette range. A Wolftooth Roadlink adapter will do that handily.

There is alot you left unsaid. What shifters 8/9/10? That said, you can easily make any of these work with some...work.
The hug was preemptive. The internet is not kind to renegades.

Hehe, thanks man, much appreciated :)

I am thinking about two options: a new Potenza has been on my mind for quite some time. That would mean 2x11. Or I could put my trusty Veloce 2011 on the new bike, that would mean 2x10. (And would give me a reason to upgrade the road bike to Potenza...)

potenza + roadlink should allow you to use an 11-40 cassette.
