Question MTB Question - bar width!

What is the current wisdom/trend for bar width?

Bar is going to be on a 29'er, fully rigid, with gears. I do get 'filtered' by trees up here on some of my local trails, so I was thinking 580MM with lock-on grips spaced out another 2 CM on each side?

I'm looking for alternatives to above, not really thinking Jones bar style with lots of sweep, just 6 degrees~and on a flat bar with no rise.

    thanks peeps!

Most off roaders prefer 700mm+ with shorter stems nowadays. You can always cut them down if you can't get used to them. DO a pushup over a meter stick, and the outside width of your palms is a good starting point.

Cool, thanks. I am starting with a 100 MM stem.

Most of the guys I ride with use 60-80mm stems. TT length is a bit longer on modern frames, requiring a slightly shorter stem. The wider bars shorten it another step.
