Default Kuat Sherpa hitch pin lock question

I traded a gent for a Kuat Sherpa (original version) and it includes a factory 1-1/4” to 2” hitch adaptor. All fits well and tight, but the hitch pin holes don’t align and it looks based upon a web search, that this is a standard design. What are folks doing for a locking hitch pin, as neither a 1/2” nor a 5/8” pin fit? Thanks

I couldn’t find anything to fit my brand new Kuat with mis-aligned hitchpin holes. When I called Kuat customer service to ask about what to do, I got a curt “there are no standards for this” from their customer service guy. F’ em!

Maybe ream out the hole in the hitch to get thing lined up a bit better?

Thanks Dave…I thought that it was me or that my hitch had a wonky eye hole. From what I have read, Kuat uses a smaller pin (3/8” dia) and it doesn’t fit tight like other hitch pins. I ordered a locking pin from Curt that looks to do the trick, so I’ll let you know if in fact it’s does. There is no way am I traveling with a rack that doesn’t lock, so if the Curt doesn’t work, it’s zip tie city. I don’t keep the rack on unless I’m headed somewhere with the bikes either, so it’s not the end of the world. I like the rack so far otherwise…light, sturdy, easy to install and store…and easy to steal!

That's odd. My Kuat NV 2.0 uses a standard locking hitch pin no problem.

Very odd indeed. Kuat confirmed that I need a 3/8” dia pin, sent me to this page for a lock but they didn’t give me the lock model number.

Yep…same pin width, different diameters. This rack is designed for a 1-1/4” hitch which calls for the 3/8” diameter pin but I used an expander for a 2” hitch, which calls for a 1/2” diameter pin…which doesn’t fit. Hopefully the Curt pin does the trick and I’ll know on Thursday. First world problem and it shouldn’t be this hard, but the wonkey eye holes are the issue. Sounds like Nick’s unit is newer and improvements were made and Dave as usual, was a test pilot.

The Kuat I bought for my wife’s car is 1 1/4” and comes with a 2” adapter on its 1 1/4” stinger. The hitches for her little car are only inch and a quarter. When inserting the Kuat into the car’s hitch, the holes are mis-aligned enough to prevent use of any commonly available hitch pins. Kuat’s reply to my what can I do about this query…”there’s no standard”…which I heard as …”tough shit”…is what steamed me. The Kuat rack is nice, very nice but not one that I would recommend to anyone. I know, I yell at clouds too.

Bob let’s us know if that new pin works or not.

Will do Dave. I know that a pin isn’t required and the tightening device seems very solid, but the enginerd in me thinks about the pin being somewhat of a fail safe device…keep it from sliding out of the hitch and the theft deterrent role is important to me. I recall a physics prof stating that “today, we are going to have fun with friction” and I just envision that hitch overcoming kinetic friction and ending up on the side of the road with two bikes…worse, ending up in someone’s windshield. if that fails to work due to the hole misalignment, and the objective is to have a failsafe locking pin, a universal style coupler lock, like the one below will definitely work.

for what it's worth, i have used a lot of hitch racks, and i think my NV2.0 is the best one on the market, hands down.

To solve my wonky hitch pin hole misalignment and can’t fit a lock issue I bought this Curt 1/4” coupler lock. It was relatively cheap and came to me in a couple of days. Seems to work just fine.

I use a nut & bolt for a fail safe, I've haven't had Kuats' ramp ball system come loose.
I did have to use a hex wrench to loosen it at the end of 1100m mile week of driving,
    instead of the knob.
