Default I stopped drinking the koolade!

Been an observer for many years and finally have something to say! I was an accomplished racer in the 80's and early 90's until I stopped racing to start a family and grow my buisness. Fast forward 15 years, and I took up riding again, which eventually led back to racing. I started riding/racing my old bike which was a John Hollands custom with Mavic and Sachs components. Didn't take long before the techno bug bit. I had John build me a new frameset using columbus spirit tubing and put sram red and a quarq powermeter on it. 2 seasond later, and I wanted to try a carbon bike. After much research, I bought a Parlee z5sl frameset. At first I was sure I wanted Campagnolo Super Record 11, but started to have second thoughts when I saw the new sram red. I have read that alot of people are very impressed with this group. I don't know your experience with the current red, but mine was of super performance but at throw-away quality. "Back in the day", if you didn't have the funds for Campagnolo record/c-record or Shimano dura ace, you bought ultegra and used it until it wore out, you threw it away, and replaced it with whatever you could afford at the time. 2 sets of red shifters (because of warranty problems) and 2 red rr drlr( worn pivot pins/ warranty problems) later, I had to ask myself if this was "wallmart" tactics....The flash is there, the performance is there, the advertising is there, and the "made in china" longevity/quality(lack of) is there. After pricing/shopping both groups, I was surprised to find that Campagnolo record 11 can be had at nearly the same prices as sram Force! I was drinking the koolade until I looked at the price of admission to "new Red". $650.00 shifters, $360.00 rr drlr, $360.00 brakes, etc. Am I the only one that has bought in to the consumer hype that is sram? Hope not. So, I have grown up and stopped drinking koolade. I bought 2012 Campagnolo Super Record 11, and after I laid down the funds, I sat down with a good glass of merlot and wash the bad taste out of my mouth!

I am willing to be corrected, but to my knowledge Sram Red isn't made in China.

While Taipei is best known for its bustling city night life, it is good to see that anglers can find
plenty of action in local streams, reservoirs, and on the coastline. While the fishing styles may
seem foreign to some, the excitement of landing fish is universal.

Kool-Aid comes in many flavors and one of them is Italian.

We get a lot of broken sram stuff coming through our shop to get warrantied
campy stuff comes in to get rebuilt.
I don't really want to get into an equipment war though. Race components are race components, they will break.
get some alloy shit and harden up.

I have no clue if is has anything to do with country of origin stuff, but have several friends who've similarly returned to serious riding & racing after 12-20 years away from the sport. But it's really across the board, how this question of durability has changed. Unfortunately you just need to reset expectations, at least in respect to (compared to 80s/90s) the super lightweight drivetrain components, really from all manufacturers. Once you've accepted that much, you'll find that there are legitimate but subtle differences and pretty clear tradeoffs between longevity and materials/weight.

This. Super Record is a strong Kool-Aid flavor. Believe me, I like that flavor and all my bikes have some Record (the highest stuff out there when I built the bikes) on them. But I'm not naive enough to know that there isn't better value for money.

Use SR if you like that flavor of Kool-Aid but don't ever assume that because you've gone from Red to SR that it's not just another flavored sugared drink. It is.

Nothing wrong with Kool-Aid but don't think you're not drinking it. We all are. It's why we're here.

Just replaced a bike from SRAM red to super record. Can't say if it makes me faster but damn it looks sexy.

    Why the negative vibes Westyboy?

Parts is parts. Every mid and high level grouppo I have ever worked on used myself in racing / training or heard about has failures.

And the entire island of Taiwan thinks that it's not China.

And how much of the Campy stuff comes from their factory in Eastern Europe?

I have to say I care less about where these components come from than I care about longevity and reliability.
