Default How many times can you re-use a hub?

Are there any general rules on how many times you can re-lace a hub?

I'm at the rim wear indicators on an American Classic (RD205/58)/Stan's Alpha 340 wheelset and I'm trying to decide whether to re-use the hubs. AC is orphaned now, but the hubs are light and aside from going through front bearings relatively quickly have been trouble free. I've re-laced the rear once and noticed that the holes had deformed some to fit spoke heads, leading me to wonder if there's some work hardening and/or deformation limit on the hubs.

I'm debating acquiring a set of Ultegra/Miche/DT350 hubs and having an all-new wheelset since I've gotta get spokes anyway, but can't think of a good reason (yet) to get rid of the American Classics

I use brass washers under spoke heads--they give the spoke a better surface to sink into evenly, kind of resurfacing the spoke holes.

A hub will always show some level of deformation from being built. The general consensusis to rebuild it the same way it was the first time. This keeps the deformation from compounding. Brass spoke washers on a rebuild are not a bad idea either. I've never heard of a limit on how many times but I would think you could get 3-5 rims out of a respectable hub, maybe more. All that said American Classic hubs are not worth getting attached to.

I kinda suspected that, then I checked prices on eBay and was shocked that they go for dura ace prices. Scarcity, I suppose. I was leaning Ultegra just for the reputation for durability.

Thanks for the replies. I wasn’t aware of the brass washer trick.

The front hub on my daily rider is a Camp Record that is more than 45 years old.
I don't know how many times I've relaced it but at least a few.

Those American Classic hubs are terrible and went through a few iterations of warranty replacements of the internals. Considering how cheaply you can buy a good used hub like a DT 350 I can't see any reason to waste spokes on rebuilding that POS.

Thanks. I found a deal on a new DT350 today and pulled the trigger. The AC has been fine, but I like the star ratchet design. I hate a skipping freehub and the star ratchet seems to eliminate that possibility.
