I had a pretty poor experience with he new Fizik microtex tacky. It wrapped ok, not great and too me it looked pretty plasticky and shi**y. Even though it is a rubbery tape it doesn't have a ton of stretch to it. I re-wrapped the tops twice to get it looking good with even gaps between the stem and end of the tape and made sure the cut part was hidden on the underside of the bars. Felt ok to the hands in the stand with reasonable grip. Took it out for a quick ride, day was hot and fairly humid. I had sunblock on but made sure to clean my palms as I ride gloveless. Got about 15 miles into the ride and hit a pothole. The bars slipped right out of my hands and down i went like a ton of sacks of potatoes. Obviously I can't blame the road condition on the bar tape but I feel like if i had a better grip surface i may not have crashed but then again who knows. This can't be blamed on the bar tape exclusively and maybe you will different results, I hope you do, but in my opinion I would never use this tape again. The second slipperiest tape I have encountered save for the Fabric silicone that this stuff replaced. Also of note this tape has the adhesive backing instead of the silicone strip which I am sure is going to make stripping the tape a giant mess once it has been in place for a while. I am hoping that mine will come right off since it only has one ride on it.

Don't know the condition of the bike as it was taken to the local PD and I was carted off in the ambulance. Probably a total loss but who knows. Broken pelvis for me.

    Ouch, get well soon!

FWIW, the adhesive on the back of Fizik tape doesn't get too messy, nowhere near what used to be with the old Cinelli Cork tape.

Oh and I forgot the worst part. I had a new set of bottles from Justinís shop, one was filled with half water/Gatorade so I am sure it is a moldy mess after sitting for a week. The horror!

    Broken pelvis? What broken pelvis.

I wish I could say I would have that attitude. Good luck healing fast.

I am partially weight bearing now and the pain is diminishing so I have to start prioritizing the recovery process.

I suppose that's the less of the two evils there.
Just throw the bottles in a container with warm water and one or two sterilizing tablets for toddler's milk bottle (they're called "Milton" here)

Well, fabric Silicone tape. It didn't cause me to crash, but it's squishy. Squishy enough that under heavy braking on a decent descent it felt like my bars were slipping. They weren't, but it was unsettling. I don't think i'm a fan.

    Wow, that is squishy.

I wrapped some PRO Race Comfort this afternoon and, though I'm a fan of the simple PRO Silicone that's been around a while, it was a complete pain in the ass to wrap. But now that it's on, I think I'll like it. Very grippy and just enough squish.

I think I might have been unfair. There are some big cavities on TRP lever bodies where the hydraulic hose attaches, so it might have been the hoods compressing into those. Iíve filled them now, so Iíll see over the weekend...

I just put some onto my Spooky. it wrapped easily and feels nice in your hand. The only thing I don't like is the price tag.

Yep, It's not you, it's me. Same ride. No issue this time. It was the hoods squishing into the space on the lever bodies. That space is no longer a space. Not sure about the tape. In dry weather I've had no grip issues (but I wear gloves). I've had to redo the taping about 5 times so i have likes the lack of adhesive. I'm not sure i'll be lining up to buy it again though, based on the price. We'll have to see how it lasts!

Adhesive doesn’t matter if it’s wrapped well

I get that, but when it's not wrapped well, or, oh i don't know just hypothetically say a remote shifter switch isn't quite where you thought you put it, it's nice not to have to deal with adhesive when you are undoing it. Again.

Iíve been trying out a Brooks saddle on a bike and I think I like it. Itís brown though so the black bar tape I have bothers me. Does anyone have any experience of the leather tape they do l? - or am I better with a synthetic one and just matching the colour.

Best bike which doesnít go out in bad weather if that matters.

It depends on what you look for in a bar tape.

All bikes in our household have leather bar tapes, wrapping or grips. Rain is not an issue: leather is a much more robust material than many people think. Yes, it's better to give it some care from time to time, such as giving it a very thin application of dressing, but it will outlast any synthetic tape whilst ageing gracefully.

If you prefer grippy / tacky tape, leather is no good. In the rain, it gets a wee bit slippery, but it's not as slippery as some synthetics get, not enough to be a noticeable issue. I've ridden in biblical conditions, and whatever complaints I had, the bar tape wasn't one of them.

If you want a cushy tape, again, leather ain't right for you. Of course, you could apply one of those gel thingies (I have a set of Fizik gel strips on one bike) on the bar before you wrap it so you get more or less the same result.

Leather is heavier than most of the synthetic ones, but if you're rocking on a Brooks saddle, I am guessing that's not a concern for you.

Or, get your fave synthetic (or cotton) tape in white. It'll look fab with a brown saddle.
