Default Dura Ace uniglide to hyperglide conversion - possible?

    Howdy all,
I've just come into possession of a wheelset - 8spd DA hubs with Mavic Open 4 CD rims. They might have been ridden twice. They're practically brand new. They'll be going on a frameset of similar vintage (early 90's I assume). They look the part.

My plan was to remove the 8 speed cassette and put a 10 speed on there and do a bit of a restomod. Well, it turns out it's a Uniglide freehub.

Is it possible to swap out freehubs to the 8/9/10 freehubs that I'm familiar with? If so, how tricky is this?

    Thanks

It should be, unless there is something different about the D/A hubs.
I've done it to older mtn hubs without issue. Once the axle is out, stick a 10mm hex key in the freehub and there is a hollow bolt that holds the freehub to the shell.

Which DA hub is it exactly? Some had dual compatibility with threads on the outside for Uniglide and the inside for hyperglide.

Looks like yes, but not without digging in a bit deeper that just switching the freehub, though I did not have the sound on because I was busy watching Super Bowl ads to see the football game.

D/A of that vintage needs a special tool to swap FH bodies. AMHIK

7700 and up all use the big allen

Now, back to the OP: the only difference I've been able to find between Uni- and Hyperglide is the wide slot in the hyperglide cassette. You can make a Hyperglide cassette fit a Uniglide FH body by filing off the wide tab down to the same size as the rest. You'll still need to run the last cog from the Uniglide cassette, but the rest should fit on just fine

I wrote this in Italian, but I made some decent pictures that should make things clear:

Unfortunately, this isn't one of them. All the splines are the same width.

I'm not sure exactly which model it is. Should that be stamped on there somewhere?

    okay, I've done some googling. I think they're 7402.

    Sheldon Brown says this:

1996 and earlier (6-, 7- & 8-speed) Dura-Ace Freehubs require a threaded body: the aluminum hub shell has matching threads. This system is not interchangeable with anything else, but these Freehubs are all interchangeable with one another, so you can upgrade from 6 or 7 speeds to 8 by installing an 8-speed body.

This is a rather expensive part, but if your wheel is in good shape, this can be worthwhile. With the new body, you'll be able to use any 8-, 9- or 10-speed cassette that doesn't include an 11 tooth sprocket.

You'll need the special tool for this, TL-FH10.

As of 2010, both the body and the tool may be hard to find.
So I need a DA-specific freehub body and DA-specific tool that haven't been made for ages. Hmmm, not promising.

Correct. If the wheels are really nice, it might be worth it to find a 7403 hub and harvest the FHB. A standalone replacement/upgrade FHB existed at one point but is now as easy to source as rocking horse poo.

In that case, sell'em to some colector on Ebay, and get something that will suit your needs.

There are tools around. I have one. Better (older) LBS-es have em.

Like I said above: you can file off half-ish of the big tab on the cogs and the hyperglide cogs will fit your uniglide FH body
