So it turns out the frame was sold to me as having clearance for 32s, but is actually only built for 30s. I wondered why the clearances were going to run so tight!

Can't really blame Eriksen - it was clearly stated on the frame drawing that it was spec'd for 30mm tyres, but I overlooked that on the basis that it was advertised as having 32mm clearance.

Long story short, the GB Cypres are too wide and are rubbing, so I might end up reverting to the Chinook Pass I was originally planning on going with after all (or I might finally try the Anthracite-coloured Vittorias). Damn shame, though - I was beginning to really enjoy the wider rubber until I checked the chain stays this morning.

Or get GB Cerfs, the wider version (blue?) is 30mm on my 18c rims. Has to be cheaper than Compass.

The Green Cerfs are the wider ones, but your point is still valid - they’re a whole tyre cheaper than the Compass... but I can’t help thinking the Compass need trying...

The Compass Chinook EL with miles is darn close to 28mm actual on a modern ~20internal road rim.

    data points:
Chinook Pass EL <100 miles measures 26.8mm on 18 internal Boyd carbon clincher rim.
Chinook Pass EL 1000 miles measures 28.2mm on 19.86 internal Boyd Altamont Light rim.

*I had always thought that Compass and Grand Bois tires were identical in inflated size. They aren't. For example, a Grand Bois Cerf EL 28 is 29-30 with wear and a GB Cypres EL 32 is actually 33+.
I wonder how wide a Compass Stampede EL 32 gets....?

Do Grand Bois tires still exist? Wherever I find them online it says "Discontinued" or "No Longer In Stock".

I'm looking for something in a 28 or so size for the Zanconato, which may see some gravel usage this spring and summer. I know it will fit 28s but I'm not sure about 30s. They'd be close.

I might just try some of the Chinook Pass but the new Panaracers look good too.

Sure they do exist, it's just that previous distributor Jan Heine now sells his Compass branded version (at slightly higher prices).

You can order at Grand Bois Japan directly, and at least in Europe there are quite a few shops that carry them.

I'm running 28mm GB Cerf Vert that come out to 30mm on my 18c rims, so the 26mm Cerf Bleu should be good for you.

Supposedly Wabi Cycles has them. Or at least appears to as per their website. I don't know anything about the business, but they are in Tulsa, OK and have a phone #.

Are the Grand Bois and Compass tires related? They seem to look very similar.

In my limited experience (Cypres vs. Stampede Pass & Cerf 28 vs. Chinook Pass) they are virtually identical in durability and ride. Grand Bois are typically $10-$12 cheaper per, however.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that most of them share the carcass and are made by the same people (Panaracer?) but to slightly different specs.
