    Default 9170 front hub lock nut issue

    Hello all.

    I tried to loosen the lock nut so that I could service my front shimano 9170 hub. Using a 17mm and a 22mm cone wrench, I tried to loosen the outer lock nut by turning the 17mm wrench counter-clockwise while holding the 22mm still. The lock nut would not budge at all, even with a lot of force. Is there a trick to loosening these things, or is it seized?

    that would be normal procedure. I did check on the disc wheelset using the 9170 hubs and it is impossible to loosen the left (rotor) side, only the right side. not sure which version you have.

    here are some warnings from shimano:


    The front hub can be disassembled as
    shown in the illustration, however, do not
    disassemble it any further than this.
    If it is disassembled any further, it will not
    be possible to reassemble it.
    • The hub cannot be disassembled from the
    left side of the hub unit (the disc brake
    rotor fixing serration side).
    • When removing and installing the seal, do
    it very carefully so that the seal does not
    become bent. When reinstalling the seal,
    make sure that it is facing the right way,
    and insert it as far as it will go.
    • Do not disassemble the crimped dust cover

    I was able to service the rear one really easily, but the front Lock nut seems to be totally stuck. Sigh.

    if it's any consolation those things are pretty well sealed so they don't really need "routine" maintenance. Unless you did a sandy stream crossing with water over the hubs, the only reason to service them would be boredom

    I wanted to open them up since the front hub has a lot of resistance to I wanted to adjust the preload a bit.

    The disc rotor side seems to be part of the axle and can not be disassembled.

    nds is fixed. DS uses their keyed preload adjust so more often then not you just back that off one click and you are good to go. As said above they rarely need to be opened outside extreme circumstance (ie c24 clincher as a heavy use winter wheelset)

    This is a very similar issue that happens with the new Campagnolo front hubs (the ones with the smaller axle&cones/adjusters): at the factory the axle end is screwed in quite tight and with no compound on the threads.
    What happens with time, is that such fine thread must be "giving in" on the thread flanks and becomes almost stuck.
    With the Campangolo hubs their original advice to hold the axle on the 14mm flats wasn't enough, because those flats were quite narrow to boot, and made in the aluminium of the axle. So most often they would deform and become unusable before the axle end could be unscrewed. They suggested to use a 5mm allen key altogether with the 14mm spanner, but sometimes that is not enough still.
    What we found, and this applies to a few other Shimano hubs too (seen the same issue on the steel locknuts of 5800/R7000 hubs), is that heating the area with a micro-torch helps a lot.

    We use one of those, is incredibly useful also for stuck chainring bolts, FD/RD limit screws, etc.
    And when refitting, only gently torqued with low-strength threadlock.

    Thank you Andrea, I tried to use the cone wrenches but Like you mentioned, the locknut is on there so tight that it flexed the wrench, it slipped, and I scratched the locknut so I cant get a good grip on it any more. i will see if I can find a heating device to see if the difference in coefficient of thermal expansion between the lock nut and the axle will help it budge.

    Worst case scenario you'll have to get a new cone nut assy, and if you have steady hand use an angle-grinder or grinding wheel of some sort and make new flats on the OD of the locknut (this will have to be discarded after)

    I think I will dremel a really solid flat surface to use with an adjustable wrench. Is the locknut easy to find?

    Indeed. Shimano parts are super easy to get from your LBS, or they should be, anyway. Harder to find in random corners of the internet. If your LBS can’t help you, demand a better LBS.

    I was able to finally get this bolt out but it came at a cost. I used a dremel tool to make two parallel flat surfaces so I could use a crescent wrench to get enough bite. What really saved my day was that the top cap on the axle head popped off revealing a nut head so I was able to use a socket wrench on that side and a crescent wrench on the other. Even then it took a crap load of force, some scrapped knuckles and swearing to finally get the bolt loose.

    This is how crazy things are now in the supply chain. I contacted shimano, who were super helpful and nice, and they have no replacement nuts nor axles right now so I have to bring the wheel to a shimano service center, they will send a wheel there so the service center can take the axle out of that one and swap it with mine. So a $5 end cap will cost $150 in shipping of the wheel back and forth and the labor. Hopefully the warranty will cover some of the costs!
