Default Wildwood Games - This Weekend

I thought I had already posted this here....but I guess not. It's late notice, but:

The first annual Wildwood Games are THIS WEEKEND! This year's event is a small scale test event for the 2015 and 2016 MTB Marathon National Championship which will be on the same course. The course uses the Bartram and Keg Creek trails as well as the Rock Dam and Cliatt Creek Nature Trail inside Mistletoe State Park, and some doubletrack and gravel roads to avoid two way traffic on singletrack. The big boy race is ~100k, there is also a 50k version (doesn't use Keg or Mistletoe). The race is Saturday Aug 23rd.

Of the ~65 miles, about 7 miles are on paved roads, everything else is dirt, and mostly singletrack (maybe 8-10 miles of non-singletrack dirt such as gravel roads, doubletrack, etc)

The race starts in Wildwood Park and goes east on the Bartram trail, then gets off the singletrack for a ways then back onto Bartram at the eastern end at West Dam Rec. Area. The Bartram trail is pretty flat, smooth, and super super fast. Racers will take Bartram back to Wildwood where the 50k riders will be done, and the 100k racers then continue west on Bartram towards the Keg Creek trail. Keg is also pretty flat, but very twisty and very rooty. Several creek crossings, and lots of logs to hop. This is not a super manicured race course. Racers climb out of the Keg Creek trail on some doubletrack into a neighborhood and pedal about 3.5 miles of pavement to get into the back entrance of Mistletoe State Park, where they'll ride the Rock Dam and Cliatt Creek trails. The Mistletoe Trails are the highlight of the ride IMO. Hilly, more creek crossings and logs to hop, several other technical areas (including a very narrow gully ride as well as a very off-camber rock garden), and some nice scenery. Once done at Mistletoe racers go back to Keg via the same paved roads ridden before, finish the remaining ~1 mile of Keg, and then 2.5miles of Bartram back to Wildwood to the finish.

Bike race is on Saturday, and there's trail run races on Sunday (up to 50k!!) if you really hate yourself.

Sign up here: https://www.bikereg.com/24944 before 10am on Friday, or in person from 4-8pm Friday afternoon. There is no race-day registration.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS - LET ME KNOW!

    Some pics from the route.

Some of the "new" stuff that parallels Bartram. Two tricky creek crossings in this section.

    Bartram

Log hopping, or CX barrier hopping, skills will be very, very handy.

Not sure what the water level will be in all of the creeks. Sometimes this one is dry. Sometimes it's thigh deep.

    BIG log hop

    Keg. Or maybe Bartram.

The Rock Dam. There's a line across the dam, but if there's water flowing over it, it's super dangerous.

Oh yeah, here's a map of the route: http://goo.gl/maps/TzN18

And don't worry about the lack of elevation meaning it'll be an easy ride, it wont be. You have to pedal every inch, there is no rest. And the forecast is calling for a high of 99*F with a 40% chance of rain. It will be a hard day in the saddle.

As a bonus Nate Zukas will be unveiling his latest MTB frame and racing the 100k on it.

Current forecast is now calling for a high of 101*F.

I'm doing the 100k and hope to be done by 2pm, when the heat index is predicted to be 106*F.

What's the worst that could happen?
