Default Ride the Abandoned PA Turnpike (aka Pike2Bike)

Bicycling Times Mag has feature article on this unique ride. Riding the Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike

8 miles of abandoned highway with two tunnels (one being 1.6 miles long).

Don't be alarmed if your gps reports ~1,000 of climbing on the Pike2Bike. The gps can't compute the road is tunneling through the mountain instead of over it. There is also beautiful riding territory in the surrounding counties. Below is a RWGPS link of a 31 mile loop that starts on the Breezewood side, traverses Pike2Bike, followed by paved road with a significant climb, a 2 mile fast descent on gravel, then onto lovely rollers that includes a beautiful wooden covered bridge. (The last mile through the Breezewood commericial area is heavy with traffic, though.)

Also, the second link is for a expanded loop of 48 miles. I haven't ridden this one yet so I can't attest for the second half of it ... but it does avoid going through commercial Breezewood at the tail end.

Maybe itís just me, but riding through tunnels really wigs me out. An inner ear thing perhaps? Iíve ridden through several tunnels on rides in Europe, with the longest one being maybe a quarter mile. 1.6 miles? Oy. I suppose itís better that at least there are no cars passing you.

    Nice routes.

    Thanks for sharing.

I am semi-local, so I just may need to ride one or both of these. Some parts of both routes I have ridden before, but the section down through Akersville and Crystal Spring would be brand new to me.
