    Default Middle GA Epic v3.0

Well, we're about 6 months out, and detailed planning has commenced. You should go ahead and make plans to be there, it's gonna be a great time!

Details (may be some minor tweaks, but the info here is pretty 98% accurate I'd say) can be found on the website at Middle Georgia Epic – Georgia's Longest Multi-Surface Race!

    The gist of it is:
    200k or 100k
    50% paved
    Mostly self supported
    No course markings
    Dang good post-race food
    Tons of southern hospitality
Peanut butter clay and/or 6" deep sugar sand are possible but not guaranteed.

Registration will open in October sometime.

If you or someone you know is interested in sponsoring the race, let me know!!

Go HERE to read some re-cap info from v2.0.

Some course photos to get you all excited.

And lastly, vSalon's own, Mr. TooTall coming into the finish on his Zank.

    Dang I'm a goofball.

Honestly if you are anywhere near this event DO IT! The route is killer, no seriously if you go off course you are lost in the middle of no-effin'-where so follow your GPS!

I had a great time and the locals were incredibly fun to ride with.

I'm THINKING about it D.G., it's a far piece for me but I'm thinking about it.

Regardless, count NFS in as a sponsor ok?

Do the 200k this year! Last year you spent a week riding in FL before the race, right?

Dewd, I want to enjoy it ;) I finished 10th in the 100k right or something like that. Obviously I had a little too much fun. I'm old, Too Tall and I don't "race" no mo but appreciate the sentiment.

I didn't say anything about actually racing, and besides, with the 200k there's literally twice as much to enjoy!

You didn't add a 50+ 100K category despite weekly emails from hundreds of old s??? What the heck D.G. what the heck indeed ;)

Folks you really need to do this. Super course that will produce yard sales which are hilarious because you'll get covered in red GA clay.

I personally appreciate there are no course markings and only one support station where they look at you like "why are you looking at me?".

    Do this.

It's part of the 40+ group, duh!

It's definitely a ride for folks that have a pretty good idea of what they're doing, which makes my life as an organizer waaaaay easier. If you need a juicebox and a pat on the back every 10 miles, this ain't the event for you.

BUT, I did add a 35k fun ride this year for folks that want/need a shorter adventure. Same format as the races tho - no course markings, only one aid stop.

T-Minus 1.5 weeks till race day. A co-worker of mine rode the 200k last weekend with another local rider, they took this pic on the stretch of the route that gets the nastiest. They were able to ride it all, and if the forecast holds it should be in great shape for race day.

FYI to anyone on the fence, due to the extreme mud conditions we're actually detouring around the extra-nasty road this year. I don't want y'all having to walk five miles (each way...as this section is on the out-and-back part of the course), and if there was a medical emergency out there we couldn't get to anyone, no ambulance is gonna make it down this road. That road gets atrocious.

This is the road in question.

Race went off without a hitch. Weather was perfect for a gravel race - overcast and cool all day other than ~20mins of sunshine and warmth, and it rained lightly for about an hour.

We're gonna do it again next year!!

A few fun stories from the day::

    • Last year's winner built a new bike the day before the race. 5 miles from the start his right pedal seized and then came off the crankarm. He one-legged it back to the finish for a DNF. It was a well-used Shimano pedal, not a Crankbrothers like you probably suspected.
    • One guy flew in from DC and had to DNF when he had a mechanical around mile 100. He wasn't interested in walking 24 miles.
    • One of the 100k racers ripped off his RD ~5 miles from the finish and walked/coasted his way in. Perseverance!!
    • One guy's Garmin crashed on his way back in, so he restarted it, and accidentally loaded last year's course, so he went up Smith Rd that we detoured around this year. It added about an hour to his time he thinks. The mud was so thick he had to take the wheels off his bike to clear it out.
    • A group of older guys somehow got off course and ended up with 140 miles for the day. They were still having a great time when they finished.
    • Only one 100k rider was caught by the 200k leaders.
    • Everyone finished before dark!
    • I made all the awards myself this year (we've had issues with award vendors the first two years....) they weren't what I would call great...one of the ladies however described them in a way that makes them cool - "distressed" LOL
    • There were two 15yr old kids that raced, one did the 100k, one did the 200k.

    A few pics.

Sprint finish in the 200k Men Over 50 group!

We ended up calling it a tie. The guy on the left had gotten caught at a redlight at the bottom of the hill leading to the finish, so it wasn't exactly a fair shake to the line. Both guys were happy with the tie.

My buddy/co-worker Jake and his two boys. Jake had a great ride and finished 4th overall.

    200k winner

The 35k fun route had the muddiest section of any of the routes. This lady cracked a bunch of us up as she and her son were leaving, I asked her if she'd be back again next year and she said she would if it was dry, she didn't like the mud. I told her "yeah but now you have some great stories to tell!" and she said "yeah, and if he (*motions towards her 40yr old son*) ever reproduces I'll have grandkids to tell them to." Poor guy looked like he wanted to die.

Exactly zero riders were upset about detouring around the really nasty muddy section. There was still plenty of mud to be found.

This guy walked/coasted 5 miles to get to the finish.

    More muddiness

Some folks were less competitive than others.

    Life in the timing tent

This guy was expected to win by many of the other front runners. He ended up cracking and had a hard day, finishing about an hour behind the winner. He laid in the grass for about 20mins fighting off uncontrollable cramps. Yay bikes!

Nope. I bought a couple 1x6 boards, cut them to length, rounded the edges on the front and the short sides, stained them, then stamped them with DIY stamps. I made the stamps with some wooden letters I found at Hobby Lobby and glued to boards. The GA outline is a cookie cutter.

    Dustin,
Those pics should go in the dictionary for Red Georgia Clay.
