Default Golden Apple / Dirty Apple

Sept. 1 in Westchester, NY. I have no affiliation with the club:

Westchester Cycle Club/My WCC: Golden Apple

The Dirty Apple looks interesting. Has anyone done it?

I've ridden that route or 90% of it. Very, very good riding.

Similarly, I've rode previous Golden Apple routes. The roads up there are wonderful, and there's lots of nice dirt. Don't know what the crowds for that ride will be like, but seems worth a shot. Happy to send you some cue sheets if you need them.

I rode it last year. The roads are lovely, but it's a tough course. More washboard than deerfield (although that can vary from week to week).
It was a hot day, went out too hard, ran out of water and bailed after lunch. (No water along the route, at least not before lunch)
There weren't that many riders last year--maybe 20 or 30 tops. I'd consider it again, if the temp & humidity cooperate.

a small group of us are meeting at 7 on Saturday morning and doing Jas0n's old Nord route. It is the basis for the dirty apple. The roads are in great shape.
Nash, Todd, Norton, Narrows, Hook are all great roads. I was trying to get people to go ride the E Mountain S/Long Hill north of 301 in Putnam with me, but no one wants to go....

You're the reason I've ridden at least part of that route ;)

For example, click on Christian's link for Dirt Roads for Darren, grab the yellow-man for street view, the parts of the route that don't have street view are usually the dirt sections, or quiet back streets.
There are a few exceptions like UPPER HOOK in Bedford. It is a dirt section that also has street view. Drop the yellow man on to the road and you get a nice street view visual of the gravel section.

Variation route from Saturday with a couple of extras 95 miles
    BlueIsDirt - Westchester, NY

Red sections are paved. Blue sections are gravel. And a lot of rolling hills. I am bummed they paved Chapel Road.

This will be my first time riding in the area and my first WCC event. Not sure what level of support to expect compared to Dee Two. I see two options: ride the Dirty Apple and have an adventure or do the Golden Apple and come back on my own to pick off the dirt sections.

Has anyone done both and can offer commentary if one course is better for this organized ride?

The dirty apple course is better. The dirty apple is not supported in any meaningful way, or at least it wasn't last year. I'd ride the Golden Apple as an organized ride, and come out and do the dirty apple some weekend with a vsalon crew.

Me and a couple of the G'wich boys are doing a 24-hour race in late October, so we need to start getting some real miles in. We'll be easy to coax.

Okie doke, then. Signed up for the Golden Apple.

Registration comes with a year membership in the WCC. What's that club like? I could stand to get off Flat-island every now and then for a club ride.

I'm a member. I never ride with the club because their ride times don't really match mine. They seem like a fine suburban club.

Hey Bob - it looks like NYC Velo is running a shop ride of the "Dirt Roads for Darren" route above on 9/22: Cycling NYC Velo - group ride

So looks like you can have a group, but un-supported, version of that ride too. Dirt Roads for Darren/aka Endless Summer has more dirt than the Dirty Apple, but doesn't have the Mountain Lakes goat path. I would recommend >=25mm tubulars or >=28mm clinchers.

There is food/drink at the start/finish (Lange's Little Store and Quaker Hill Tavern), a good country store at mile 26 or gas station at 26.5 for refreshments, and an easy detour into Katonah for fig bars at mile 59.5 (I would actually recommend skipping the 59.5 - 62.0 section - sort of pointless). There is a great bike shop at the start/finish too - Bicycle Julio, but they are closed on Sundays in the late summer, fall, and winter.

You can usually park across the street in the (former) D'Agostinos parking lot, but they may be cracking down if the Walgreen's is open by 9/22. In that case, I recommend parking on the streets behind the bike shop. Street parking on Poillion will be difficult because of the Catholic Church there.

It's a good ride - includes Hunt/Keeler (going "backwards" from the usual climb) and the crazy zoo on Croton Lake Road. Not sure I am going to do it (first race of NJ CX is same day), but I'd recommend it.
