I was kidding about the extra distance. I'm going to hang with the type-B's.

Anyone who bitches that the ride is too short can ride up Centennial after the meal with a tummy fully of meat and beer. The rest of us can pile into a car for heckling purposes.

So, let's split the difference. Not a ride around the block, but not Diablo. Maybe a slightly longer loop for the A-types and a shorter route for the B-fatties after a common rollout that brings us back together at roughly the same time? That would require some math, but given the loops and permutations in the East Bay, seems doable. Might even be possible to set up a loop that has the A's try to catch the B's if we're game for a challenge.

Loser has to cover Vlad's tab he's going to vanish on.
Chalking the lack of collards up to California BBQ problems. They should just call them "kale."

If we do two groups I nominate Eric to deal with the math.

I had a double-crash descent of Happy Valley into Lafayette on a wet, foggy morning 13 years ago that I still remember fondly, but I still like Happy Valley for some reason.

I did a reasonable approximation of that once, riding up Claremont after an hourlong breakfast that followed a two-hour ride. It was one of my more enjoyable Claremont ascents, likely because we expected nothing from the climb.

When I asked my now father in law for his daughter's hand in marriage, I came out from Chicago, where we lived at the time and I was not riding because it is so damn flat. He took me out for a MTB ride, putting me on the old clunker. We stuffed ourselves on Chinese food in Orinda after riding over the hill. The route back featured Toyonal/Lomos Cantadas. I didn't complain, much.

I've lived here almost 8 years and have never ridden up Claremont or El Toyonal or South Park. I guess i like my climbs around 6%, not 10.

It's less about the 10% average than it is about the 15%+ pitches.

Best part, IMO. And I'm a flatlander. Live down here for a while and you'd be looking for every possible opportunity to hit 15%. Especially when the reward is eating at one of the plentiful awesome restaurants in that area.

Hell the hill I live on is a 15% grade. That's why I after riding with BCM I ask him to drive me home :)

There's a short cut that avoids the dip, reducing the climbing a wee bit, which I can show you.

    A shortcut on which climb?

The whole point of El Toyonal is maximum suffering in minimal distance. Seems like a shortcut defeats the purpose?

Or you can look at it as the short cut removes the respite of the descent and shortens the distance.
