Default The Underappreciated Art of Being an Asshole.

I awoke this morning to a slight headache, pounding on my door, and an email from DarrenCT that simply read "Dickhead v Asshole thread."

Last night, over several rounds, we got into the subtleties between being just an asshole (henceforth referred to here as being a dickhead for clarity) and being a really, truly great asshole. I've always admired truly great assholes. There is an art to being a truly great asshole.

In my opinion, a dickhead is someone who is rude for little purpose, and to little effect. He usually doesn't even realize he's a dickhead. There is either an over-inflated self-awareness, or no self awareness at all. An asshole, however, is someone who has honed his craft, and is able to tailor his words and actions in order to truly benefit from his current situation. If done well, being an asshole will not only net results, but changes others' viewpoints. To be blunt with a purpose, to have meaning. To use reason, logic, and pull emotional strings. A balancing act of brains and bravado.

Here's to the assholes of the world...

    Got some cash
    Bought some wheels
    Took it out
    'Cross the fields
    Lost Control
    Hit a wall
    But we're alright

Assholes pull it off, whereas dickheads rarely capitalize gracefully.

You hate to love an asshole, but you do.

My wife says I'm a world class asshole (even though we do really get along and have a good life together). I agree. I have very asshole-like tendencies. I hope I'm not a dickhead because I don't really feel like I have anything to prove. I just am what I am.

Maybe not the best thing to be proud of though?

What's even better is to be a true east coast asshole on the west coast. People out here are so friendly and happy that you can really fuck with them using only a sliver of northeast skill.

Like shooting fucking fish in a barrel.

An asshole who isn't lovable is a dickhead. Same guy can be both. Will be both.

An asshole w/o a brain is a dickwad.

Archie Bunker is an asshole. Morphologically speaking he's also a fat fuck. Fat fucks are a specific subspecies of dickheads. Skinny fucks don't carry the same connotation for some reason. They're more like bitches.

I need to get me some shallow drops.

It's so true, being an asshole in the bay area is a piece of cake, even for a low level dickhead from NYC.

I have long strived to be a true, fucking asshole. At my best, I pull it off, but I do fall short at times being nothing more than any other dick head. But in those moments of mastery, when that perfect storm of condescension, humiliation and concise dismissal occurs, I experience myself as a master, the DiVinci of demean, the Bach of bastards, the Hendricks of hostility.

These moments may be few and far between, but they keep me present to the possibility that I can be such a man, a true, Asshole, proud and free.

I think being an asshole is healthy. It is the perfect antidote to that "Everyone is a winner!" crap found anywhere hand-knitted indigenous cheese is sold.

I like the posts above, but more times than not, I think of a great Asshole response ten minutes too late. Damn those Southern manners!

Assholes are line and mid level managers. Dicks are the leaders. Why? Dicks are targeted and f both the pussies and assholes. Assholes are just loud, stink up the joint, and produce at-best recycled crap.
