TT are weird things. I use two. The first is a Linn LP12 (Valhalla) that doesn't use a clamp or weight. The second is an Oracle Delphi Mk2 which came with an aluminum clamp. Clamping or weighting a record on the LP12 makes it sound worse. Not using the clamp on the Oracle does not make an audible difference to me. Another thing to try is a the sticky polymer plinth mat that grips the record from below. That didn't really work for me but audiophile stuff is nearly always YMMV. Experimenting is fun tough.

    Wait.

They make turntables that don't include integrated screw-down clamps made of the same material as the platter?

Why would they do such a a thing?

you just have to try things out.
I have some cheapy metal feet on my turntable and they are annoying to setup, and also not the look I'm into. so I took them off and put some regular hard rubber feet on the bottom of the walnut base. damn!!! where did all my high end response go!!!!
the table still sits on those annoying uggo metal feet...I couldn't deal with the high end loss.

Lots of other stuff I've tried (besides swapping cartridges) never really made a big difference in sound, cables, VTA, Tracking weight (small adjustments). I haven't tried a weight though.

but, upgrading to a nice phono preamp from a cheap cheapie I built made a HUGE difference. Replacing a bunch of resistors in the nice phono preamp made zero difference...except it got rid of the intermittent crackling noises that were coming from the plate voltage resistors that were deteriorating...

Seriously? I think it's probably worth some experimentation, especially if the weight is inexpensive. It might help with clarity and pitch.

But I'm guessing that the impact will be subtle, and unless you've got a fairly high-resolution system (nice phono amp, amp, speakers/cans) your other equipment might mask any improvements.

I haven't had a record player in decades. I think about getting one sometimes. Then I read about feet and weights and all the other stuff and I don't do it. This isn't snark this is just me not being able to get into one more thing.

CDs ripped to and played from a computer for me.

    It's nice having options.

I have a turntable - a VPI Jr with Rega RB300 and Ortofon Blue- a CD/BluRay player - an Oppo BDP93 - but I mostly stream these days, through a Sonos Connect.

Single crystal, oxygen free Inconel-X750, cast in a reduced gravity field.
Cryo aged for a year, to remove internal contradictions.

It adds considerable dynamic stiffness and internal compliance to the music.

Everything effects the sound. But you've got to have sufficiently high-quality stuff in order to hear those effects.

    Yeah it's a paradox. It's also true.

In my personal experience replacing all the cables from my sources to my amps? The difference was not subtle. The VPI Magic Brick, however, made absolutely no difference.

Forget cryo-aging, hot isostatic pressure is the hot ticket. What is hip.

Mine is depleted uranium, from Fukushima, that has been hybridized with a gold/lead mixture and polished to a fine finish by hand.

I forgot to add - mine is hand polished by Jiro, while he isn't making sushi

In addition to aging *and* pressure, a little Heisenberg Compensator work can go a long way.

When I used to read "The Absolute Sound", I figured

A: They are on the up and up
B: Some Graduate Psych students are having some fun.

    Never sure which it was.

i wanted the JR very badly back when i used to enjoy upgrading stuff. I also have the Ortofon Blue on a Planar 3 and am very impressed by the cartridge's performance.

My opinion is that it takes a lot to get a setup so well done to affect the tonearm with the type, position and material of the counterweight.
By then, you're spending more time tweaking than just enjoying music, as it should be. Don't get me wrong, I like to mod everything, because it's fun to do things from scratch, surely I'm not parting 200 bucks for a special counterweight.
