Prine was truly special. Words fail me to describe his unique gift.

I became a fan of John in the early 80’s after seeing him perform in a local park and we have been fortunate to see him when he made the rounds here every few years. All great memories and he had such a way in bringing you down to earth with songs about real and relevant issues and then he would queue up Dear Abby and the night would be all good. RIP for sure with much respect.

He was special alright. I found this video a couple of months ago of him doing a living room show in Toronto Canada. I watched it again last night. For fans, it's a lovely little intimate show worth watching twice.

Rhino records did a beautiful vinyl reissue of his debut album in 2017,
if you happen to find a copy buy it.

John Prine - John Prine (217, 18g, Vinyl) | Discogs

PS, some asshole has listed a copy for $200 on discogs.
this is a $22 record at Barnes and Noble, but it's been hard to find for a while now,
and of course when an artist passes away, opportunists come out from under their rocks.

I was late to finding Mr. Prine but saw him a few years ago with Jason Isbell and Amanda Shire. I went there to see Isbell, and he did not disappoint, then sat in wonder at Prine, his post-cancer voice and his lyrics. Have been buying and listening to his albums ever since. Such a loss, though a life well lived.

His songs could make you cry; either out of joy, out of sadness, or out of sheer gratitude that someone could reach in and touch that thing which makes us all so human. Now he's whistlin' and fishin' in heaven.

I was lucky enough to see him many times over the years. He had me at

That song is incredible, can't describe how or why it does what it does to me, but so powerful.

    Me too!
    Angle from Montgomery
Sabu the Elephant Boy (I know it's not the song title, but it's the way I remember it)
    and
    many others.

I love how he understood how to leave songs open for us to fill in our own connection.
That is genius one to everyone.

    Thank you John Prine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    What a gift.

I liked his song about some weird angle on Montgomery, but liked the Angel angle better.

I too came into Prine-dom relatively late. I saw him twice. Once in Columbus and once at the Ann Arbor Folk Fest. At the folk fest (which is a fund raiser for The Ark which is a little gem of a venue) he pulled all the acts from the night to sing Angel with him. What a great memory for me and I can only imagine how wonderful it was for the musicians. If you have not found "Tree of Forgiveness" yet, please give it a listen. It seemed like he knew he was soon to be called home. He closes the Strombo session above with "When I get to Heaven." I'm going to cry while I get myself a vodka and ginger ale.

His Austin City Limits show is a great way to spend an evening. Pretty sure my wife decided to watch it after reading the headlines, but not really knowing him as an artist. I could tell she was enjoying it by how much she was shushing me and the kids.

The first time I saw John in 80 or 81 at the RKO in Davenport. He was touring with Arlo Guthrie and some friends wanted to see Arlo sing a song about Alice. I wanted to see John sing Sam Stone, and Paradise. My friends talked a lot while Arlo played, and never said a word while John did, he had that kind of presence.

Just watched John Prine's show on Austin City Limits from 2018 with guest Tyler Childers.

Check your local PBS listings...it's not to be missed.

Our local NPR station produces a lot of good content.. WPLN in Nashville just did a 1 hour special, ‘John Prine 1 Hour Radio Wake,’. It’s totally worth your time.. John Prine was a local and this was a fair effort at sending him out as well as could be.
