My dad put boxes on the fence posts to the pasture in front of the house and to him the drama of the birds taking ownership and raising the brood was the best entertainment. When he wasn't just sitting silent in his own prayer observing the beauty. Each year I'd get word "They're back!"

    He's great.

Looks like most of his bluebirds are Mountain Bluebirds, the only bluebirds in the US that are all blue. Eastern and Western Bluebirds have a rust-red to red-brown belly.

Amazingly, most of the bird conservation and resultant data collection (starting in the early 20th century) was done by "amateurs" or non-professionals. Scientists in turn have benefitted from both conservation efforts like these to judge efficacy of more comprehensive programs and from the data collected (which though collected by amateurs is incredibly accurate - not many disciplines where the non-scientists to as good or better a job on data collection than the pros) over many many years, which has made climate tracking and habitat conditions much easier to evaluate.

NestWatch from Cornell came out of this amateur conservation and from the data collected, and Cornell is turning it around, so to speak, and offering people who are interested in nesting birds tested/proven designs for bird houses and their installation as well as ways to record data from either nest boxes or naturally located nests.
