Wrapped up the financial agreements for the divorce yesterday. It's going to sting a little for 4 years, but not really that bad. The new job pays well and I'll have plenty to live a good life, play N+1 every few years, and see my son at the Naval Academy several times a year. I traded in my F150 and my son's Focus on a new SUV that will carry 4-5 bikes, all locked inside. I'm heading to Vegas Sunday evening to househunt in Kingman, AZ for a few days. Need to find the balance between access to riding and not getting all my stuff stolen while I'm at work.
    I heart burnt bikes.

My 20 year old daughter is interning at a Big 4 accounting firm. She’s been back & forth between Chicago & Dallas all summer and the National partner for her group invited her to dinner the other night & they hit it off. She’ll get an offer at the end of her internship for a position when she graduates. As the parent that raised her I feel like my role in her life is about 99% complete. And I sleep better as a result.

Sneaking out of work at 4:30 on a bright dry afternoon to go for a flatwater paddle on a cold, shady reservoir on the Deerfield River.

I have the afternoon off. Wife, I and two - maybe three- handfuls of our friends are heading to the cottage for our annual cottage weekend.

Only grump is that the hydraulic trim on the boat isn't functional so we wont have a boat this year :( How many pushups did I just commit myself to? Multiply it by 3, we do a pushup competition on the (rigid) floating raft every year, i'm excited but not well prepared for it this year. Like @Lionel im a few kg too heavy - so im going to be taking on some alternatives this year to heavy beers - I think a local vodka with water will be my choice.

My parents are looking after our daughter, I hope the wife gets a break this weekend. Shes been getting terrible morning sickness as we prepare our lives to be a family of 4. Yet again, very excited.

I've finished so much around our house since the move, my mornings this week have been moving sprinklers around and pulling wire in the garage to get my tools set-up. Finally a little comfort after a really hard 3 month push to get it really dialed in. Still a lot of projects and a lot of painting on our short list but its light stuff now and less landscaping.

    Congrats! That's great.

Just wait until she's able to take you out to dinner and a movie to celebrate Fathers' Day. Oh wait - that's me!

We are all still getting used to living in the same neighborhood, but it's really nice: After the movie we rode the subway back to her stop and I walked her to her apartment. Then I had a grueling 10 minute walk back home. And last night she & her boyfriend came by. He helped me carry a table up from the basement, and then they headed off for ice cream.

I have my sight, counting my blessings for that. For the last three weeks I've been studying all day for the bar exam with a legally blind friend. His testing accommodations came through- turning the bar from a two-day to a four-day exam, necessitating lugging assistive reading technology around, and making the general lining-up of logistics a nightmare. It's enough to make a guy relieved to take the regular exam.

Last ride in Paris, TX this afternoon. I pick up a 4X8 U haul trailer in the am to move my bikes to AZ. Six bikes, the Pegoretti, Nobilette GT, Serotta, Merckx, Gunnar, and the Coconino, plus the Merckx track frame. All my tools, workstand, and spare wheels. My clothes and a cat will travel in the vehicle with me.
    I heart burnt bikes.

I got to ride tubulars on Wednesday, and Thursday, and I'll get to ride them again today. Plus, on Thursday's ride of Chicago's Lakefront Trail south of the Loop, I saw the most amazing skyline I have ever seen. Cyclists were stopped along the path and just gazing. Of course I didn't have a camera, it being Thursday, but good God. A passing storm deposited a lowish shelf cloud in dark blue that framed all the skyscrapers from above. The lake water was a dark turquoise. The sky below the shelf was a glowing purple-orange, and the buildings all levitated between the shelf cloud and the water, their lights twinkling through the mist. Chicago is fugly, but this was on par with Yosemite.

Dunno what time that was but landing at Midway in and around the storms was a thrill.

I just got past one milestone in the project that gets me a toehold on the system so maybe today will be a success and I can enjoy a weekend in town with Karen without having to come back out here, she's winging her way here right now on time and smooth air. She has a footloose day in town... me jealous.

Treat yourself with a pastry at Southern France Patisserie, on Irving Park Road just west of Southport Ave. (4000N, 1400W). Best croissants in Chicago, if not the entire US. The fruit tarts and eclairs are top-notch, and the fancier things are always interesting in a "better buy two" kind of way.

I could not have predicted 18 years ago that I'd be moving all three of our kids in the same week, let alone to three different places. I've been dreading the tedious side of the moves for months now, like renting vans, packing, unpacking, weather, lack of sleep, etc., but I've been looking forward to seeing the kids make their next moves, as that's what you live for as a parent...seeing your kids grow and thrive and getting out there in the world.

Favorite (only) daughter moved from graduate housing at Udub to her first apartment in Seattle last weekend...easy peasy...not much in the way of furniture, moved a bunch of "stuff" and bought a bed frame and mattress. I forgot though, how much fun moving "stuff" to a third floor apartment without an elevator could be. She's all set and it was cool doing Dad things like checking out the neighborhood in search of coffee shops, cool restaurants and bike shops. No shortage of any of those in the Capital Hill neighborhood for sure and she and her roommate did all of the leg work like find the apartment, deal with the lease and organize the utility connections. I just dealt with the Dad questions, built the furniture and cursed the designers from IKEA.

Number one son (middle kid) has always been a challenge and he maintained his "special" status in terms of his move. I took a red eye from SEA to CMH on Monday evening, rented an extended van, sucked down 2-3 Nitro cold brews, drove to Athens, Ohio and packed his gear for the 4-1/2 hour drive to Bloomington, Indiana...Go Big Red...his home for graduate school for the next four years. My wife and youngest son drove from Pittsburgh and met us in Bloomington and we set him up in his new place which is right downtown on College Avenue. Indiana has such a great campus and a cool town to go with it and we are looking forward to visiting and exploring the area. Same deal...did the Dad thing and scoped the coffee shops, restaurants and bike shops...no shortage in Bloomington either. I hope to be able to attend the Little 500 in April and let out my inner Breaking Away.

Saturday will complete the trifecta as we move our youngest to Columbus to attend The Ohio State University...please note the emphasis on the word The. He is super stoked and there are boxes of his "stuff" as well, staged in our living room, ready for loading into the van and the RocketBox tomorrow. With 59,000 kids, The Ohio State University doesn't eff around on move-in day and we have a flow chart to follow (I kid you not) along with a ten minute window of time to pull in front of his dorm, have the helpers unload his gear and then park in a designated area. After that, he's got a full slate of weekend events before classes start on Monday and from past experience, he won't want us hanging around too long. That's the way it goes and he's going to be a tough one for my wife to see off as he's her baby...all 6'-3" of him.

Come Saturday afternoon we will officially be empty nesters and the drive back from Columbus, based on past experience, will be a somber one indeed. When we've taken a kid to college for the first time or when we've taken them back to school after an extended break, it's always an event and there on the drive back, it's just the two of us hoping that it all works out for them. And you know what, it always does.

After all the bitching I did on the Thursday thread, here is my "glass is half full".

    1. My son completed his plebe summer at the Naval Academy and is thriving in that environment. He starts classes next week.
    2. My packed to the gills Ford Expedition pulling a packed to the gills Uhaul got 21 mpg on the road trip from NE Texas to Kingman AZ. Hurray for Ford's Ecoboost technologies.
    3. All the bikes in the trailer (5) arrived unscathed. Same for the wheels.
    4. My new place has a three car garage and a workbench.
    5. Trails and dirt roads fan out from my neighborhood.
    6. My soon to be Ex is finally accepting that we're proceeding with the divorce and will be done around October 1st.
    7. I get my first paycheck which includes about $3k of relocation reimbursements on 8/24.
    8. I talked to my son last night. I'm so proud of him that I get all teary when I think about it.
    I heart burnt bikes.

Follow-up of grump a couple of Thursdays ago regarding my wife and oldest son both needing major surgery. My wife had hers last week and is doing incredibly well - a combination of her toughness and spirit and an exceptional surgeon. Very thankful for that and enjoying lots of quiet time together, which we otherwise rarely have.

First vacation without our kids in 25 years...a little bit sad in that they’re not here, but they’re are moving on and enjoying the next phases of their lives. I did throw out the idea of a family Spring Break vacation and I quickly received 3 “I’m in’s”.

I feel ya. But you're doing the right thing of course.

I had dinner with my (once again local) daughter last night and we talked about some bad parent-child relationships we know about. Too many parents' goals for their kids are actually goals for themselves. Something I realized is that I wanted to raise her to be a happy, fulfilled adult. My goals for her never included, "...and lives nearby me and likes the same music as I do." She chose to live nearby me. The music thing, on the other hand, is a lost cause!

Playing 18 holes this afternoon, early teal season starts tomorrow and I can't wait to see the training with the dog pay off, college football is now underway.

I hope to be grilling bacon wrapped teal while watching Scott Frost's Huskers do their thing Saturday night.

    Enjoy hour weekend all!

I have hit the nadir. It's all up from now on. Ending a 30 day stretch where I got to ride five times. Getting back on the bike tomorrow. If everything goes right getting on a new bike sometime next week or the week after. Holing up with Karen tonight with plates of spaghetti, date night tomorrow, not working again until Tuesday. I'm going to go out and live slow in our flower gardens.

First full week at work. I'm doing hands on stuff to learn all the processes before I can begin my management job. I'm still on the email chains for Engineering and Maintenance Manager and saw something I vehemently disagreed with and put a halt to it. I went in early this morning and talked to my boss and explained the situation to see what his stance was. His answer, "that's why I hired you". I feel better about it.
