Also I don't subscribe to the idea that happiness comes from an increased life expectancy and lack of danger. I wouldn't want to live in prison, even if it was a luxury palace, and animals kept in a zoo do not transpire happiness and good mental health.

Anecdotal experiences are only that. Cats living outdoor die younger that's for sure, they are also much fitter and full of battle scars but that don't necessarily mean they will suffer more than those that will lick their skin to the blood or eat like crazy out of boredom.
Sounds like you are mostly talking about yourself there.

The key argument is the ecological damage that allowing cats to live outside creates. Just like other issues that are rejoined with arguments of natural or cyclical phenomena, or authentic versus artificial, inherent nature versus prescribed or constrained behavior, the central fact is that the environmental costs render those sort of arguments moot. They are just too high.

The reality is that the long term economic instability of the Caribbean and Central and South America will doom bird species no matter how proactive the US and Canada are on conservation issues. Years and years of poverty, economic disparity, corruption, industrial oligarchies, foreign trade of critical resources, means that birds that thrive in the north end up not returning after winter in the south.

This study is referred to and linked at the bottom of the article from the US Fish and Wildlife above.

Thanks. The same three authors as the newer study that estimates cat vs. bird deaths at 1.3 to 4.0 billion a year. Their 2014 study, using a review of 13 previous studies, estimates car vs. bird deaths at 89 to 340 million per year. It recognizes a "need for implementation of conservation and management actions to reduce this mortality."

This still makes me wonder why cars didn't make Cornell's list.

In other news, I've suspected we've had a feral cat living out back this summer. The younger dog has been on high alert. Last night at 3AM we awoke to a huge ruckus very near the house with very agitated barking from a lone coyote. It sure sounded like the cat mounted a successful defense.
