    Default Cleaning LP's

Much to the chagrin of Mrs. RW, my sons convinced me to set up my old "stereo" system over Thanksgiving and in setting up the turntable, I found this LP cleaner that I used to use. The cleaning fluid is long gone, so do any of you have suggestions for a home brew and is there a better way to clean the LP's before I play them again? Thanks

PS The look on their faces was priceless when they heard my Advents came back to life. I told them that Advents are just ok, as I still mourn the sale of my JBL L-100's many years ago when I needed the money to get my Opel back on the road...life goes on.

    You don't have an HW-16.5???

Seriously, he gives a nice formula for a cleaning solution: 3 parts distilled water to 1 part isopropyl alcohol.

I saw a thing somewhere where they coated the record in wood glue (I think...) let it set up, then peeled it off, and it pulled all the dirt and whatnot with it. Would get expensive (and time and space consuming) to do a lot of records.

David...that's awesome...Jorn, I know that your wife is an attorney, but does she take on divorce cases? I ask because if I placed my LP's in the dishwasher, that is where I would be headed.

I've actually never scaled that height of obsessive analogue insanity.

    But...

I was listening to Joanna Newsom's Have One On Me this morning, Tidal Hi-Fi streaming to my Sonos to my stereo.
And it didn't sound nearly as ethereal and lovely as her CD played through the same system.
    Dammit.

She doesn't do divorce unless you are 2 multi-national corporations where one CEO feels like the other CEO got an extra portion of cheesecake at the luncheon to celebrate their recent merger which is now going down the toilet because of the aforementioned cheesecake inequity*.

(*You might think I am kidding. Maybe not dessert but name plate, parking space, office size, golf game, etc.)

I have a washing setup bought for short $$. It appears to be nothing more than a sponge and dish soap.
Google-foo tells me a good microfiber cloth and a scant amt. of dawn soap will do the job.
This is the setup I have and it works fine:

    I've got an HW 17.

David, the Joanna Newsom's LPs sound outstanding. When she finishes some of her phrases with that high screech of hers it can make you jump out of the sweet spot.

Look at a site like this. Music Direct | Vinyl Records, Turntables, High End Audio Equipment & Accessories

They will have all kinds of cleaning fluids that will blow your mind. Think NFS quality stuff for long green.

Here you go, RW. I recommend you accept the advice of counsel.

on the really dirty LP's i've used diluted windex and a paintbrush to clean the groove, then a rinse and let it sit upright to dry. careful to keep the label mostly dry.
I usually don't both with washing liek that ^, on bad records i think most of the groove noise is not going to clean out.

because she has an attachment to your LP collection? exposing vinyl to hot water is going to warp it. exposing the paper label to soap and water is going to damage it.

What are those wiggly wood tower things? And the stuff taped to the sides of the speakers? Plus why spend all that money on giant speakers and then wear headphones?

That kid needs a bike and to go outdoors.

If an LP isn't too dirty, I usually just let a carbon fiber brush pick up the dust as the platter spins up. Keeps things from skipping, and seems to pull out some of the static electricity causing pops and such.

There are steps to cleaning records beyond rubbing them on your AC/DC tour shirt?
