We were at the Mucem campus last night and could see the smoke billowing from just outside of the city. By the time we got on our bikes to ride home, the whole sky was apocalyptically dark. Today I'm in my lab, which is on the very southern edge of Marseille and everything smells like campfire. From atop Col de La Gineste and Col du Pas d'Ouillier, where I ride in the mornings, the whole city is covered in a slight haze.

There was a good sized fire here in western Montana too. Friends were evacuated. We watched the helicopters and planes flying in with massive water buckets.

Cooler temps and rain earlier this week helped get it under control. About 10,000 acres burned. All started by sloppy campers failing to put out their campfires.

It was absolutely horrible here. 5km from my house. A lot of the places I ride my mountain bike in are gone. Luckily for me it was south of me with the Mistral (north wind) blowing at 100km/h. I know someone who lost their house to the fire.

Pretty smokey here in Monterey, just north of the Soberanes fire. Definite smell of smoke here, inside hospital even. Actually good that we smell the smoke as that means winds are from the south which pushes against the fire. Over weekend winds from the north really advanced the south edge of fire. Emergency evacuation at 3 am by reverse 911 for some people I know.

Lots of funny things. "Hikers" rescued. Hmmm, you guys don't have a single thing from REI. You sure you are hikers? Nope. Marijuana growers. Fortunately for them their crop burned so no evidence.

Dozer operators attacked by growers. Hmmm. Good place to do a back burn.

Multi million dollars second homes in the Preserve get two fire trucks and a team of 9 firefighters to protect them. Small occupied homes in Big Sur sure don't get that protection. I wonder if insurance companies demand to have the multi million dollar places protected. No, I don't really wonder.

Several of my favorite hiking places charred.

All from an illegal campfire. Tragic.

Damn. Use a portable camp stove. Leave camp fires to the Middle Ages.

State officials finally released the cause of the Napa fire last year that led to four deaths and some of those crazy evacuation videos: Faulty hot tub wiring that wasn't permitted and up to code.
