Default What's the consensus on this (language)?

I've seen some posters told to ease off foul language and other posters that are allowed. Seems like there is a movement to keep the posts generally SFW, but it's not enforced equally at all.

I have no preference either way. I just prefer if there's some consistency.

Great, so you're offering to read and monitor everything posted on the entire forum?

Currently i don't think there is anything systematic in place, nothing is enforced
until it happens to come to the attention of a mod and they feel like doing something
about it. So basically, if you're expecting some sort of 'equal enforcement' you're
in the wrong place with a group of volunteers who have lives and full time jobs.
Just hang out and enjoy the show. Or not.

There's more than one mod that types foul language so it's not a matter of missing an occasional post. I don't want this to be a finger pointing exercise. I don't personally don't mind if it's allowed.

In hindsight I could have PM'ed all the mods and asked offline. My bad.

Being a moderator on another forum as a volunteer I can confirm it is not easy to maintain consistency and read every single post. People baiscally know the general guidelines and there is a report button if you really feel someone get past those boundaries.

If you're worried about this place being SFW (safe for work), then maybe you should be working
rather than wondering what your boss might say if he saw how you spend your time there atmo.

I've been told to ease off my language once. I've also seen others asked the same.

Not worried about any boss thank you.

I have no idea if your referring to me but I've been guilty a few times. If anyone is offended by something Ive said, send me a private PM. This place should be for the enjoyment of all.

Again, not offended or even upset I was asked to refrain from the f-bomb. Just not sure if it's okay or not.

Language for humor or emphasis is one thing. Language when directed at another person is different and could cross lines. The tone makes the music.

I think we need to be careful not only about the words we use but the meaning and intent of those words. As mentioned, this place should be for the enjoyment of all and when we start to get so serious on a bike forum that we use questionable language directed at someone we need to look in the mirror and ask ourselves where our priorities lie.

That's a post to you from a year ago, and today you start a thread? I get the concern,
but the lapse in time is odd. I'm offended that you waited so long to address this atmo!

What I find frustrating is not some PC sensitivity but folks who cannot form a coherent argument without always reverting to "foul" language to express themselves with the written or spoken word. An expansion in vocabulary can do wonders for both individual credibility and overall enjoyment of discourse. And of course, one never knows who is reading a web forum.

No reason. I'm pretty sure I tried to bring it up before. I haven't posted/read as much here as I used to and noticed the change. I didn't get around to asking about it again. When I saw David's post I remembered that a mod asked me to refrain from the very language he used and it was in a conversation I was involved with. That thread got locked so there was no chance to respond and would have caused an unnecessary drift anyway.

PS - David, I wasn't trying to infer that you were crapping on the OP. Just quoted due to your response to someone else.

If when a part doesn't work, and someone posts that it's fucked, I'm okay with that. When folks occasionally use fucking as an adjective to describe a situation, I'm not phased at all. If the language get misogynistic or similar, or if diction s so poor that posts are punctuated with curse words for the sake of it, I'll sit up if I even see it. That's my baseline.

Don't we have enough censorship in life?

    Safe For Work?

    I don't understand that concept.

If someone is paying you, then work.

I like to think I have a pretty deep well of words to use, but sometimes a guy just has to fucking cuss.

    Are we PG-13 or something?

I've only ever been called out for offending someone's religious sensibilities. My personal take is that even if someone says something I wouldn't say myself or something I don't think anyone should say, I won't bring it up as long as it seems like their heart is in the right place (that's somewhere in your ribcage if medical science is to be trusted). Seems like that's the way most people operate here. If your conscience allows it and a mod doesn't stop you don't overthink it.

I'm active on another board that uses auto-censors on posts. Geez... I once wondered who the heck John Han was... On the Declaration of Independence, you know...

I think nsfw is being used as a general term in this discussion, like PC or PG-13. My boss wouldn't care about the cussing, but if I get caught fucking around on the internet, i'm probably in trouble. Shit, here he comes...
