Default What to pack with a bike when going on vacation

Reviewing a recommended packing list. First time I've seen someone suggest this.
A replacement rear derailleur hanger. Anyone travel with a bike and bring this on a routine basis? -Mike G

    Depends on the hanger.

I don't normally bring one on trips, but I usually travel with a steel bike that has an integrated hanger. That said, it's a small part and easy to stash in a case, so I don't think it hurts to bring a spare.

I bought a few from Paragon a while back and always travel with one. Granted that's mostly bikepacking and long-distance travel, lots of gravel too - but it doesn't hurt and takes basically no room..

I have a spare RD hanger for all of my bikes that utilize a replaceable hanger. Most of them have just either come with, or were purchased at the same time as the frame.

The time to start looking for a replacement RD hanger is not after the one you have breaks :)

I would say, if travelling with a bike with a replaceable hanger, I would bring one, it's small enough and especially on a big bucket list trip like the alps. What if accidentally, for whatever reason the RD hanger snaps off in transport of the bike - your trip is fouled before you even start.

doesnt need to be OEM, there are cheaper, and even universal ones available.

    check out this selection:

    Wheels Mfg Derailleur Hangers

the universal ones are temporary only to get you back on the road, until you can get the correct one, generally speaking.

my advice: frame pump and a digital pressure gauge. just as good as a floor pump, and much smaller. plus, you know...frame pumps rule.

I have a frame pump. It's the silica impero. I can't get the tires to fully inflate. I busted a valve trying -Mike G

the emergency ones, of the universal type usually mount outboard of where the RD hanger is supposed to sit so you need to re-adjust the RD limit screws to get gear range back. This is OK obviously to finish a trip or whatever but is not a permanent fix if you break a hanger. At least that's the way it appears to me, i have never actually used a universal hanger.

I started traveling with a bike with a replaceable hanger last year, so I tossed an extra hanger in the kit that stays with the bike case.

I've never needed it mid-trip, however the one time I bent the hanger in a crash when traveling I also busted my arm...

That said, I travel frequently enough to get some value out of having a basic travel kit ready to go with the right tools, tubes, tires for the travel bike.

Greatly simplifies packing and reduces chances of missing a ride.

There's a way to pump the tires without placing undue stress on the valve stem. Hold the pump, not the wheel.

Good move on the hanger. I'd recommend adding a small chain tool and a quick link to your bag of tricks. And a leather toe strap.

Oh, and something warm and/or windproof for when you get to the top those alpine climbs.

if you are going to France for eg the Tour, make sure you pack a corkscrew. Not many screwtops there.

Unless the Tour is going through Switzerland- they are leading the charge worldwide for screw tops.

Ironically most of us have a Swiss Army knife with a corkscrew and you should pack yours.

    I pack this:
    Pump
"Real tools" needed to assemble and disassemble the bike
    Lube
Rags- but I also use the rags (old t-shirts) to further cushion the bike
Painters tape and bubble wrap- for better protection
    DI2 tool
    DI2 charger

I also bought pipe insulation from my hardware store and made perfectly sized pieces for all of my frame tubes
