Well at this point, Quick-Step gets my vote for most exciting grand tour team. Very entertaining!

Actually like the look of their new Tarmacs too, especially covered with road crud.

Even the riders with the biggest palmares such as Sagan, Boonen, Cavendish, Kittel or Froome do their share of domestic work when asked to.
Didn't Barguill tow the line (and the rider) when the team helped Matthews haul back points in the green jersey comp?

So much for Nico Roche. But here comes Nibali!

I'm an eternal Contador fan and he rode well today. Tried a couple attacks, but he's just not the same rider he was a few years back. Too bad he had that rough day early. He'd still be in the fight, but Froome looks tough to beat at the moment.

I thought today's strategy by Bahrain Merida was the sort of approach that could dislodge Froome eventually though. Just a matter of who gets worn to a frazzle first. Nibali has done a good job being patient.

The spectator 1% are idiots. One just took down the neutral support moto. The Spanish police are outstanding in actively blocking the runners but you can't block them all.

Astana car tried to crowd Froome out of the turn? Seemed like the group had every right to keep the pedal down though, because Contador was a potential threat to Aru's GC placement. Did Nibali slow everyone down? Just kind of seemed like a mess.

The Yates twins are good riders, they have both won the Tour de France (young rider) white jersey, Adam in 2016 and Simon in 2017. In the space of two days Adam has gone from 1:55 behind Froome to 24:42 behind and Simon has gone from 23:28 behind to 54:46 behind. Things can change quickly.

I didn't see the car crowding Froome. I just saw his wheel slip out. Also, I didn't hear anyone saying they needed to wait for Froome. The race was on with Contador as a real threat in the top 10 even if he's not a threat to win overall. They definitely had to chase him down.

This was not an ambush on Froome by not waiting, but real racing.

As per Eurosport coverage and Sean Kelly, Nibali came to the front and appeared to argue or at least have a discussion with both Lopez and Aru on the front of the peloton. From that point, Froome started gaining time on the group. Sean Kelly also said that on the second crash the Astana car cut into Froome's line and block him, forcing Froome to correct left to go right and that's when his front wheel went out from under him. On the replay, you could see the Astana car hit the brakes, but hard to tell if it was just bad driving (on both parties) or not.

The Guardia appeared to have orders to block anyone who tried to touch a rider. They missed the guy who got to Belkov, but they definitely got the green shirted guy who tried to give Contador a push. Unfortunately the green shirted guy took out a motor bike afterwards when he got run over.

The Aqua Blue bus fire evidently had security ramped way up (again, according to Eurosport) but Carlton Kirby said police reported the culprit was a local arsonist known to the authorities who had been arrested for setting fires on several previous occasions and was now once again in custody.

"I thought maybe that something would happen today [Thursday] but not like this," Nibali told reporters afterwards. "When Alberto Contador went, we were going flat out to chase him. When Froome crashed, we were already going all out to retake Contador so there was no waiting." see Nibali: no waiting for Froome after Vuelta a Espana crash | Cyclingnews.com

I don't even understand why there is a discussion about it.

Ah, well that's good. It is what I would have hoped they had done.

    Because baseball is boring?

I wasn't saying they shouldn't have kept going full tilt. Just wondering what happened after seeing the little conference at the front and hearing Kelly's commentary. I can't understand waiting for someone who falls down on their own anyway. Staying upright in the race is one of the requirements, eh? If you can't stay upright, oh well.

I agree with this. This wasn't a rider falling due to bad luck during a lull in the race or anything of the sort. It was game on, fighting for GC spots. They're not under any obligation to wait for Froome.

If Nibali's group would have gone full tilt they would have caught AC. They were not close to that.
