Default Velocipede Salon Member Spring Break rides 3/12-3/18

At least it's Spring Break for me and my son. It's his last high school spring break so made the annual road trip to AZ. Yesterday we stopped in Flagstaff to see the guy that built the bike I brought this time. It's currently disguised as a road-ish bike with the Boyd wheels and 32mm tires. I rode 42 miles with drive-lagged legs, I really didn't feel that good on the bike until the last dozen miles. I rode from the hotel in Ft McDowell out to Needle Rock and back.

    Le sigh .........

What are those funny looking round things in the wheels????

PS: I think I am going to be in FH on the weekend (if nothing screws that up) - if so we are planning to go out to Luke Days at the AFB in Glendale.

The small discs are for keeping the joggers out of my way on bike trails. I keep them sharp and I'm hoping someone makes a serrated version. If the weather forecast is right and there's rain on Saturday morning, I'll head to Tucson that morning early and ride up Mt Lemmon. From there I'm taking I-10 home.

Hard to believe we went from the first pic - which was taken yesterday evening from our dining room - and the 2nd pic, taken on my drive in to work this morning, to getting home at 4pm and discovering all the snow had melted and evaporated, and roads were totally dry and sunny. So I went for a fast 20 mile ride right after dinner. Thought for sure I wasnt gonna ride today.

Did you live in Richmond when there was still a Ukrops grocery chain? I don't think they are in business any longer. Richmonders had (and perhaps still have) this nutso Pavlovian reaction to snow in the forecast. Everyone got into their car and drove to the Ukrops and bought all the milk, bread and water. Like the little chip at the base of their neck received a signal, and suddenly they were digging for the car keys. And the shelves would get emptied. Meanwhile, there would be the kind of snow you've pictured or no snow, or maybe just maybe 4-5 inches or something, but it never lasted beyond 24 hours. Certainly not long enough to dehydrate and starve.

So the rumor was that the weatherman and Ukrops were in cahoots, and whenever there was a surplus of milk at Ukrops and the opportunity in the weather, the hook got baited by the weatherman's forecast and Ukrops reeled them in.

The other thing that Richmonders did when it snowed was get out in the car/SUV/pickup truck and drive really fast and get their car stuck/crashed/bent up in weird places.

I mean, Richmond was a weird place to begin with, but that's another story.

No, we've only been here 6 mos. But I will say.. the bread and milk thing I've seen in every large city I've lived in - which is about a half dozen. I've always thought it's a just weird thing people do, like pulling your windshield wipers off your windshield when it snows. ;)

Did another AZ ride today, this time for 44 miles with a smidge more climbing. It feels slower on the gravel bike with the 32mm tires, and I think it is overall, but I've done well on some climbs, likely due to the gearing. The "road" wheels have a 11-28 cassette to go with the 36/46 crankset, and I've yet to use the 28, but the upper range with the 36 makes for some nice rhythm on the longer climbs.

On my way back through Fountain Hills, traffic was detoured around the intersection of Palisades and Saguaro. Some guy had jumped the curb with his vehicle and hit 4 pedestrians on the sidewalk, killing three and sending a fourth to the hospital in critical condition. Scary stuff. The driver was in his 20's and was apparently not impaired. It happened at 9:30 am, bright and sunny day.

I did 40 miles this afternoon - a very chilly ride in high winds and sunshine. Afterward Grace and I went out to dinner at a raw bar restaurant I've been riding past on one of my routes. Had asparagus and crab pizza.

Went riding in some weather that was crappy for AZ. I rode from the hotel out the Beeline to the Bush Highway and down to Saguaro Lake, climbed back up to the Beeline and went out to Cline Cabin road and then back. 37 miles, 2000 feet of climbing.

Pictures, the lake is Saguaro, the mountain picture with four peaks is Four Peaks. It was the hardest ride of the week, I had 1000 feet of descent in 14 miles into a 25 mph headwind. I was completely blown up.

Word from the police is that “ distracted driving” was the cause.

Because the kid just had to read that text message ....

I did 20 after work/dinner today. Was planning on riding farther but there was just way too much traffic barreling towards home.
