Tropical heat wave here in CT now. Glad the Pego has water bottle holders now! Also did a little around the town Sweetpea ride and then some twilight fishing too with honeybunny...

The day didn't start so well this morning. Came too fast to avoid that bramble branch.

Now I've this on both sides. Not the most comfortable thing especially with the heat and sweat.

Had to come into the city last night as Mrs Waterdog had to work there today. I figured a perfect opportunity for a three hour ride. It was so crazy hot in Manhattan that I decided to go up through Harlem and over into the Bronx and out to City Island looking for cooling sea breezes.

Needless to say, there really weren't any breezes of note except for when there was it was a bit like being under a hair dryer.

In the hopes that the breeze situation would improve, I decided to sit and recharge outside at a restaurant where I ordered the oddest food group I have ever thought up for mid-ride sustenance...cherrystones and shrimp....

Off course, because the awning talked tropical drinks when the waiter asked for a drink order I said Pina Colada which was the single stupidest thing I have ordered in the middle of a stupidly hot ride. The worst ice cream headache ever. Not to mention the pain that outlined my mouth, throat, esophagus, and stomach from the crushed ice descending into my over heated body.

All in, while it was the hottest draggiest 50ish mile ride I have ever done, even the cramps in my legs the last 3 miles down Second Avenue didn't ruin a fabulous day simply because of the sights that I saw which I had never noticed before. NY is a truly remarkable city.

68 miles total. About 55 on road/MUT and the rest on the single track at Palos. It was hot so I brought some extra water.

Did an afternoon 45 mile ride yesterday. Even had time to feed my buddy at the picnic benches I normally stop at briefly, and even managed not to get too wet in the drizzle. All in all, a good workout ride. :)

A balmy 91* with 60% humidity, so by the end I looked like I had swam instead of biked.

I really got my scheduling wrong, the weather is much nicer today. I should have done the long ride today and groceries yesterday.

McKenzie Pass in the Central Oregon Cascade Range is closed over the winter due to snow accumulation. For a short few weeks in late spring, the roadway's snow and debris is cleared and the road is left open for cyclists to enjoy before the gates open for motorized traffic in late June. Tried getting out here earlier this month, but scheduling was tight or weather didn't cooperate. So I decided good or bad weather, I'd get out there before the roadway gates were opened (which happens next week).

The weather looked promising. At least for a ride start in Sisters, OR. Sunny and in the high 50s with a 20% chance rain. The actual Pass, on the other hand, was a different beast: 34F, windy, sleety and dismal. Crappy, yet one of the best rides this year.

Sunny start to our ride in Sisters, Oregon.

Climbed through Ponderosa pine forests and lava rock hills and buttes.

Progressively colder, wetter, darker towards the top of the pass.

Sleety, misty and windy. No views of the surrounding volcanic peaks.

At the top of the pass, temps had dropped to 34F and wind & sleet picked up. My wife hid in the restroom for shelter and stuffed her jersey with toilet paper for the cold descent. True Pro!
