Default Velocipede Salon Member Ride and Ski Reports - December 31 - January 6 2019

Short ride up Madera Canyon made maddening by cold headwind coming straight down out of the canyon at 20+mph. Then a storm swept into the valley, and now Mount Lemmon is getting another dumping of snow.

Head into the headwind (and 8% grade)

Got in my 144th ride of the year today, a nice 24 miler up and down the Connecticut River, up the VT side, down the NH side. Rides this time of year are unexpected gifts of the weather gods. Today was upper 30's and dry. Tonight shit comes in with rain, snow, sleet, wind, and rolls out sometime tomorrow after dumping 3-5 inches of wet crap.

Hampsten Strada Bianca with fenders and Paves and made with ti is a great winter bike.

It's also a great summer bike without the fenders with Vittorias and light wheels skewered on tight.

No pics. Just think of greys and browns in various shapes and you've about got it.

Jan 1, 57 degrees, wet but what a treat. Finished my ride just in time for wife's Osechi and Ozoni. And you wash it all down with Toso. (Spiced Sake for good health of course. )

Unseasonably warm (in the 40's) and extremely windy.
Between the storms rolling through last night and the winds this morning, the ocean was very unsettled early in the day.

Temps around 50 for a windy New Year's Day metric century.

A little sunshine teaser this morning after the high winds and the rain last evening but it's 2019 and I'm above ground...just like my favorite sycamore. Happy New Year girls and boys!

We got over 8/10ths of an inch last night as the storms rolled through, so the wander through Petersham was definitely soggy. But the 48 degree temps made the high winds quite comfortable, and we had a fine 5 mile tramp through a Trustee's of Reservations property.

Well, the year started out right, I can say that much...perfect 40 miler with the Baltimore wrecking crew Tommy Barse (cutlassvelo), Chris Bishop (Bishop effing bikes), Johnny May and Scott (?). Tommy made the arrangements and put some awesome county roads on tap, and great post-ride hanging out at his new shop location. It was no coincidence that my bike was shod with a perfect set of Cutlass-built wheels (as on 2 more of my bikes) so if you have any wheelbuilding or expert maintenance needs in the Baltimore area, Tommy is your man.

Woke up to this at about 8AM:

So we went for a hike instead. Ended up seeing quite a few nifty birds (hepatic tanager, greater pewee, painted redstart being the best) likely because everyone was a bit panicked by all the frozen stuff.

Around 3PM, things were a bit calmer in bird world (pic from slightly higher elevation viewpoint than in the morning.)

Yesterday I did a 5am boot camp class to finish up a monthly challenge by doing 5X50 squats, 4X50 leg lifts, and 40 pushups (just one set). Kind of wrecked after that. This morning there was a local group ride but it was 18 degrees with winds gusting to 30 mph. Nope. I did an hour on the KICKR. I'm getting a MTB from Garro, I spent most of today on the internet finding all the parts I wanted.

When I lived in downtown Boston the town I'm in now was about as far west as I'd venture on a regular ride. Anything further required more time than I am usually able to find to ride. Now that I've moved a whole 18 miles west, there is a brand new world of riding. Looking forward to a full year in the new house and many more new routes to ride.

If this was the start of potential Iceland training, the gray and blustery weather was apropos.
