Default Velocipede Salon Member Ride Reports-June 11-June 17

Decided to go as early as my body would allow so I could try getting in a real training type of ride down the West Side greenway and over the Brooklyn Bridge before the tourists and CitiBike crowd slowed things down.

So, the Bridge was great but OMG the number of people that commute by bike from Brooklyn while not a total surprise was a bit much for that section of my plan. I felt like a salmon swimming upstream.

They built a new park where the Domino Sugar factory (an iconic sign seen from Manhattan for years) was.

From it you can see the Williamsburg, Manhattan, and Brooklyn Bridges and very faintly (only bc it was on an iPhone) in the distance the Statue of Liberty. And of course, the city which is iconic in its own way.

Great ride but now the problem is what do I do with the rest of the morning?

Did a shorter ride today after a long one on Saturday and chasing my friends from Woodstock on Sunday. I wanted to ride two roads I hadn't yet, and both turned out to be primarily up. By mile 24 I had 2400' of climbing, but what goes up must come down so down I went for 28 total and only 87 more feet. The roads were actually great with lots of amazing houses (Spencertown, NY area) and I saw a bobcat duck across the road in front of me and a bald eagle soar low over head (I could see it's head turn to give me the eye.) Nice.

I've been doing my usual 20-50 mile daily rides - except today due to heavy rain. I did get in a used (and very ugly white) 120mm stem I bought on eBay. Installed it this evening. Basically it's 5mm longer than the stem I had on the bike. If I like the new length I'm gonna buy higher end stem in the same length later. :)

I passed 4000 miles for the year this afternoon. The first year after I retired from the Navy, I rode 4000 miles.

Pictures: It's hot in the afternoon but I can take it better than the humid mornings. I was wearing some old Hincapie shorts that have seen 6 Texas summers and a 13 year old Voler Commuter Jersey. Dress to impress.

Rode up Mt. Washington Rd from South Egremont (roughly) to Mt. Everett and south to Mt. Riga and Salisbury CT, then looped back around through Millerton NY back north to Hillsdale. Road varied from terrific paved to an old lady's driveway full of glacial erratics. But overall a lot of fun, even though my legs threw up their hands midway up the first climb and told me I was on my own for the rest of the day.

No I did not. There is a Mt. Washington and a town (basically a handful of houses) called Mt. Washington and then Mt. Everett State Reserve with Mt. Everett to the east of East Rd that runs north south along the central part of the South Taconics and goes through the Mt. Everett State Reserve but does not go to Mt. Everett. East Road is called Mt. Washington Road at the north end of the South Taconics and again at the south end of the South Taconics where it turns left and is called Mt. Riga Road (also a town called that) that goes down to Salisbury CT.

I get confused up there. Must be the altitude. Anyway, here's the Strava image (link removed because it becomes an advert - grrr.)

Looks beautiful, I'll have to check it out sometime. :)

That area is my favorite place to ride in the entire world.

I did 25 fast miles before work, then later 30 or so after dinner. Also discovered that my new 120mm stem is too long, so back to the 115mm stem I was using before. Very glad I bought a cheaper used stem for this experiment, and not a higher end 120mm stem.. :)

Last day of riding with Dogrange for a while. We saw two rattlesnakes, a gartersnake, tons of lizards and a turtle.

I am three days back on the bike after a few weeks off to let my ribs and back heal. Little ring riding, just whiling away the hours till my legs come around again. Beautiful weather, anyway.

Maybe I'm putting too many of too many of these pictures up. I've never seen another cyclist on this road for 14 years, and yesterday I saw two!

A nice stiff breeze raised a chop and kept the deerflies at bay for the return leg (which is uphill).

Early Morning Fat Tire ride with friends. Stopped at the top of the Lesner Bridge to enjoy the view.

I did 70 miles today in very high heat and humidity, followed by one of my awesome low cal, low fat, scallop topped pizzas.

22 mile commute. This new piece of rail trail gets me off a couple miles of busy road and goes through some wetlands with good bird/wildlife spotting.
