Default Velocipede Salon Member Ride Reports July 10 - 16th: Buck Moon

Only four of us on last night's Full Moon ride.

It's remarkably relaxing to cruise country roads and forest trails in near complete darkness and silence, occasionally punctuated by bright moonlight in a clearing or the sound of something rustling in trees off the trail...

Passed a barn with the doors wide open, warm light flooding the area, silos silhouetted by the moon, old houses (1800s and older) surrounded by ancient stone walls.

Some trails are smooth and fast utility access paths, others classic NE singletrack with rocks and roots and washout, and others used primarily by horses (might need to think of a paceline signal for the accompanying hazards on this type of trail...).

    Roll out at dusk

    Full moon through the trees

Sign said "private" so had to backtrack a bit - then found another trail... which dead-ended at a pond. Bullfrogs were alarmed by the lights.

I need to work on my nocturnal photo skills, but take my word for it: It's a great ride - if you're anywhere near Sherborn, MA, consider joining. Check the Ride HQ site, or DM me.

Gonna be a hot week here in Virginia.
Put the Shamals on the Cannondale for the first time. Coupled with 24mm tires, this thing is fast, but borderline harsh.
I think my best setup is Shamals on the steel Indy Fab, and Ultegra/OP on the SystemSix.
Funny how ‘princess and the pea’ we can get over time.

I took out the OG Spooky rolling on 25c a few weeks ago...

After months on 650bx42 and other plump/plush options, I was feeling that pea!

No worries though, 27c makes it go away.

16 miles after work. Decided at the halfway point to take the hilly way back which meant a slow grind for part of that, but a favorite local ~2 mile downhill near the end. The weather looks a little iffy for post-work rides the next few days but the bike awaits at the office if things end up decent enough.

Got out for 34 this afternoon. It's hot and humid, not Dallas hot but close enough. I had to dig out the old shoes because the new shoes were still too soggy from yesterday's rain ride. I brought the camera but it never left the jersey pocket. I'll try to remember tomorrow.

A early evening to dusk spin-a-bout on lovely Puget Island. That little rock has got some "magic" to it that's for sure......

Gravel ride on the Rail Trail. Many forest fires in BC make for a smokey morning.

I had a nice ride today.

    Roads, gravel, dirt.

Heavy cloud cover, damp but no rain.

You could SEE the humidity in the air...

Rode 33 miles. I headed east again because a friend needed a picture of a water tower and I knew where a good one was. I rode to Blossom and then on to the Red River County line before turning back and doing a loop to the south.

Pictures, some scenes from Blossom (700 people), the south loop, and my kid's high school.

It's scattered thunderstorm season here in GA. That means you can be riding in a torrential downpour and five minutes later you're on dry roads. Last nights B Group started with over 20 riders, but when we hit the first bit of rain and didn't slow down we lost a bunch of folks, there was only 8 of us left. Some turned around, some got dropped.

I felt great last night. Probably because I didn't stick my nose into the wind until about 14 miles in haha

It was hot heading home last night, and hotter still today.
Not too fun putting on the same bibs for the ride home these days.

It occurred to me today that I am going to miss these 70 degree high humidity dead calm mornings later on down the road.

    20170712_060736.jpg

Two hours ten minutes on what turned out to be a suboptimal route choice. Passing half a mile of stop and roll traffic before the bridge construction zone I squirted a rock out from under my front wheel and Bang into a guy's fender. I was hoping I'd make it out of there before he caught me again but not to worry, even with being detoured onto 100 yards of loose sand and baby heads I made it out of there and up the other side of the river with no further incident.
