I decided to give this 'bikepacking' thing a go - As far as I can tell its mainly pushing your bike up steep hiking trails in the freezing rain and snow (yes, snow).

Awesome reports so far. Tell us about this serving apparatus. Appears to be a house for your pickles with a bread roof. Is that a common thing in the alps? Protect your food from the mistrals?

Most of my ride was through a fine mist of flying ants, quite a few of which I ended up eating. Interesting taste. Sort of like a lemon flavored 9 volt battery. But now I find I can lift my car with one hand.

I might have made that last part up.

I love how the north shore guys are rocking down the trail on hard tails and vintage MTB's. It got too easy on modern bikes, so they are making it more challenging. I knew a kid in State College, PA (i.e. rock gardens you wouldn't believe and elevation) who decided to run everything fixed gear with only a front brake. He was a natural athlete and riding with him (and his stupid fixed gear) served notice; I'd better find a real profession, cause mountain biking wasn't going to pay the bills.

Yesterday was Cascade Bicycle Club's High Pass Challenge, a 104 mile jaunt from Packwood, WA, to the lookout at Windy Ridge (overlooks Spirit Lake and has a great view -- some days -- of Mt St Helens) and back. The ride is timed to the lookout, based on a 7am start. We rolled out en masse, and immediately hit rain for the first 8 miles. 200 of my new best friends. Fortunately it cleared up by the time we were into the meat of the climbs, and it just kept improving from there.

This was form over function - The blade was a bit dull on the pivoting chopping knife, so it mainly served to separate the pickles from the charcuterie. Atmospheric though!

Thanks - Its pretty hard to take a bad picture in the Dolomites. Even prettier once the sun comes out, which it finally did, when I was riding back to my car...

Same peak as seen from part way up Campolongo looking back towards Corvara + another pic of sweet sweet sunshine...

Left this morning for a tribute ride to Dario... Clouded skies prompted musings about bike and man... The Man...

Rode trails again yesterday afternoon. I could hear the bottom bracket over the crunch of gravel so when I got home I removed (Ultegra) and it was really trashed, I probably should have paid attention to the noises on previous rides. I had a new one in the parts box, good to go. I got a year (around 4000 miles) out of a road bottom bracket on a gravel bike.

Early ride today...clear lenses and headlight required.

Just over 5,000 miles this year, too.

Smoke cleared in the Metro Van area, so I played some hooky from the office and tested some waterbottles.
