Default Velocipede Salon Member Ride Reports- April 12-April 18: Blooming Days

Finally done with border quarantine today.

Finally nice enough for a ride.

Finally got to ride the bike I was separated from by the border.

This bike will never be allowed to stay on the side of the border that I am leaving again.

Like a cellphone. Always with me.

Spectacular afternoon. I haven't been this giddy since I don't know when.

Amazing what a good ride outside can do for mental health.

Hoping the northern border will be wide open in August. We already booked rooms in Montreal.

For now, though, a ride on this 75 miles south of the border will do:

Spring...or fall, or summer or winter; it always looks the same. The only thing we adjust is the temperature, a lot.

I managed to enjoy some time on the road early this morning in honor of New (to me) Wheel Wednesday, as who is patient enough to ignore a freshly glued set of tubies, who have been staring me down since Sunday afternoon. Bruce, the scenery is spectacular btw.

We had our second vac a month ago, Annie and I visited my son Wylie in Santa Cruz for the first time in a year, did some fire road and road riding. Actually ate at some socially distanced/outdoor restaurants, felt weirdly wonderful.

crazy steep lipped dirt step up jumps(place called "steps by the sea") located south of SC on the ocean cliffs, ocean view from there

Rio del Mar community south of SC and Wylie's ancient Colnago framed bike

transitory art from bridge over San Lorenzo River where it meets the ocean(an estuary), made with a rake in the sand by the guy in the back right of the pic, as soon as the tide comes in the design is gone, may or may not be a maze, hard to tell.

A slow ride earlier this week. I hope to get back out soon with a bit more energy.

Had a few great days riding in sixty degrees and then last night snow fell: 4" by 4 am, 6" by 7, and its still going.

Went for my yearly physical yesterday. My doc is the quintessential old-time country doctor. He invited me into his practice: we ski and ride epicyclically. I knew my fitness was approaching halfway decent judging from my appearance and the comments of some friends I ski with, but I hadn't been on a scale in a year, so was a bit shocked to find I am at the low end of former racing weight. Which means I will find climbing a whole lot easier this year.

I will be out your way in May, Clarity, staying with my Aunt in Lompoc for a few days. Looking forward to seeing the Santa Ynez again, and riding Highway 1 south of Lompoc. Am I right in thinking those dead trees are Eucalyptus? How'd they kill them?

Those trees are in Santa Cruz, not sure but don't think they are eucs, there aren't any other eucs near the location of those trees. Might be pines killed by pine beetles, seem too straight(excepting the one) and tall for eucs.

Woke up, fell out of bed
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup
And looking up, I noticed I was late
Found my coat and grabbed my cap
Got on the bike in seconds flat
Found my way down the road and I was stoked
And somebody spoke and I went into a dream

I was Assistant Judge on the finish line of a bicycle road race today.

All the crashes that i’m aware of happened on straight, flat road when riders bumped and could not control themselves. Even happened in the first 5 minutes of the M 1/2/3. Happened a few times in the last 300 meters too.

    Two(2!) fully-full 50 rider cat 4/5 men’s fields for tomorrow’s 6 corner parking lot criterium.

Hopefully all the hard zwifting and bikepacking pays off for these new guys!

First group ride in over a year today: Found five other post-vaccine friends who were itching to do a sweet paceline. Man, I'd forgotten how good it feels to ride with other humans!

I'd also forgotten how infuriating the incessant "mechanicals!" on a group ride can be! Though in fairness, the double flat at mile 7 was caused by vandals who littered the most popular cycling route out of NYC with carpet tacks. Must have seen a dozen groups at the side of the road changing one or more flats within the first 10 miles. Fcuk vandals.

btw, surreal moment of the day: I'm waiting with my bike for the elevator to take me down to the street first thing in the morning. Elevator doors open, and it's already occupied by a couple who are holding a cage with an enormous rabbit inside. I'm momentarily dumbfounded but then point and say "rabbit!"

The guy points to my bike and says "eTap!"

As the elevator doors are closing his wife yells "We love eTap!"
