Default Tour stage, race this year

    What a race so far.
Best Tour I have seen probably ever...
French underdog hangs on beyond belief...
stage cut in half yesterday from weather, Impossible to race those roads.
Young Columbian kid rides away with the race seemingly.
Today's stage chopped down cause of clearly impassable roads.

Will make for an interesting scenario today.
    " Must watch tv".

Not easy running these events at altitude in summer... afternoon thunderstorms frequent in the Alps, ultra hot weather...
To me the decision making made the most sense...
Notable was Alaphillippe was not gaining in the descent on Bernal... which was his hope.

If that stage had finished as original I thk Alaphillippe would have ended up 5th overall....
That said He had a remarkable run... for a " Non climber "
But he was exposed in the last stages for sure... plus he had zero team support the whole race really.

As has been mentioned ad nauseum, this has been the most exciting Tour from the perspective of a couch-sitter since 1989. It has made me realize that all Tours since, I've pretended to be riveted by the excitement.

It's nice having someone to root for.

But this might not end as well as it did for Nav.

My wife ignored the tour for years claiming that I could turn on a recording of previous years and not tell the difference. About 5-6 years ago, she sat down with me and watched a mountain stage and that was the hook. This year, shes loving the daily mix-up and dutifully records each stage so that we can watch later. I just got back from a ride and she told me do not turn on the tour and spoil it! You folks might enjoy the link below which talks about the fans...Ill include myself and Mrs. RW.

Was hopeful for more rider-drama rather than weather-drama. Agreed it was the best in years. Sorry that Ineos ended up on top.

I was going to watch this later this fall after my housing drama and move are complete. Or in the winter if they aren't complete. Thanks for spoiling this for me.

Please, don't tell me who won the Super Bowl last season. I'm just getting to the Packers' bye week on my VCR.

    Saab,
I'm sorry I slipped into a post that Stephen Roche won the Tour in 87
I know we use a 35 year delay on results.

Good thing I didn't tell you which Packers' season I'm watching. Has Favre retired yet?

I rode in a SAAB once. My name here comes from the airplane I used to fly when I worked in Switzerland.

I was enjoying the individual stages, and the drama of each day,
the race was building to those final 3 days in the mountains, but the whole
GC race turned out to be so anticlimactic.

With the stopping of stage 19, Pinot's abandon, cutting out the Cormet de Roselend from stage 20,
the hyped battle for GC never materialized.

Although it was in vastly different circumstances, the way Bernal won reminds me a bit of another young winner, namely Contador.

Contador inherited yellow when Rasmussen was thrown out of the race and then very nearly lost it in the final time trial. He followed this up by winning the Giro and Vuelta when the ASO kept Astana out of the race. Then Armstrong came swaggering back into the frame and assumed he would be top dog. Contador then demonstrated how very mistaken he was.

Bernal was third cap off the rank at Sky/Ineos. Froome broke his leg and Thomas never really regained his 2018 form and Bernal assumed leadership by default and on the road. Bernal rode into the lead in circumstances where there are some question marks (could he have maintained his lead to Tignes had the stage not been brought to a stop). Froome and Thomas both still have ambitions. Bernal seems quite savy and he will be aware of all of these various issues. With 12 months of further experience under his belt, I expect he, like Contador back in 2009, will be wanting to demonstrate just how good he is.

I doubt Froome will ever manage to reach his previous level given the injuries he experienced and his age.

Agree on Froome... he will never regain the form he has shown in the past.
Thomas got one and that's enough for him.

We get to see on Bernal... but on either of the altered stages there was zero indication that he would not simple gained more time on chasers.
Alaphillipe had a wonderful and unexpected race ( for himself as well as the team ).
If the shortened stages were run full length he most likely would have ended up 10th instead of 5th.
This is not meant to diminish his race but he is not a climber on par with the rest of the top 10.
Noting his awesome catch descending the Galibier...( 20 seconds ). he was not closing the gap to Bernal (2 min/10 sec ) after the Iseran....
that lightning was not going to strike twice...

All that said he was a fantastic race leader for 2 weeks!!

Great race after years of US Postal type boring domination as shown by Sky/ Ineos.
and an rather awesome display on bungling by Movistar...worst possible result... 3 guys in top 10 nobody on the podium and the ultimate consolation/booby prize... They win team GC.
Too bad about Pinot but he doesn't seem to ever finish the Tour.
HE was electric for a few stages though.
