    Default Today at the LBS...

I found myself in need of a clincher tire today ( I know, perish the thought...) so I went to the LBS to get said tire...

Me: Standing there looking at the wall with tires on it. They have Conti GP 4000s, 1 Conti Gatorskin, Conti Ultra Sport, 2 Mich PR3's in nasty colors, and a single Mich Krilium...

Shop Rat: Can I help you?

Me: sure... what's this dif between the 4000s and the Ultra Sport?

Shop Rat: (looks at the price tags) about 30 bucks...

    Me: Thanks...

Shop Rat: no prob (walks off)...

I swear, it went down just like that, you can't make this stuff up...

It's why fora like this one and mail order sites exist. They prey on the existence of idiot shop rats.

After working in a shop for 4 years I can say without a doubt I have never sold a tubular, I've been asked about a tubular once and to 95 percent of the Freds who the lbs preys on $30 is the only difference.

Sometimes you just have to ask the right person. You can't really expect a kid like that to know every detail about every item in a shop, as that's impossible. What he should have done was gotten a a coworker who did know.

no silly, that was the _difference_. 30 dollar tire at the lbs is a wire beaded beast.

some folks only think of things in terms of _how much_ .

    the kid should have said,
"like this one is well like its more grippier and the the other one well it's like not so grippy but it'll last forever and rolls right over glass and nails. which one do you want?"

You might also translate that as, "I've been making $8/hr for the past three months explaining the difference between tires. It doesn't matter because it's all just a bunch of rubber on a wall. Pick your pricepoint..."

If a customer doesn't already know the difference between an UltraSport and a GP4000 it probably doesn't matter to them. He probably also thought you were fat and slow. Knowledge isn't always the only or most appropriate explanation in these interactions.

Amen. Maybe after he said "about 30 bucks..." you could have asked "Is that all?" Continue the conversation and (maybe) get the answer to your questions instead of just ending it.

I haven't ridden on a clincher (other than a trainer tire... on the trainer...) in over 6 years... I haven't purchased a clincher other than a trainer specific tire in that time as well... The only reason I 'need' a clincher is that when I went to order tires they were out of the flavor I like to use, so I just bought two of something else to ride until the ones I want are back in stock, and I cut a tire. So I went to get a clincher to ride until my replacement tires arrive...

Having said that, I know that a GP4000s is supposed to be a good tire... I had never heard of an 'Ultra Sport'... The GP4000s was $75, the Ultra Sport was $45, thus the question... I bought the Ultra Sport, reasoning that I'm only going to be riding it 2 maybe 3 days until I get my tubulars...

    According to Conti: http://www.conti-online.com/generato...guide_race.pdf

The GP4000s is recommended for Training/Tour/Marathon/Race/Triathlon/Time Trial, The Ultra Sport only for 'Fitness', whatever that means...

Had I been aware of this I would have bought a GP4000s, the riding I do is all in the mountains. I'm either climbing or descending, really slow or 40 mph +, nothing much in between, and it's not unusual to get caught in the rain and have to descend in the wet. All of this is the reason I usually ride Veloflex Roubaix's, and am currently on Vitt Pave's because the Veloflex were unavailable when I tried to order them...

I am seriously wondering how bad the Ultra Sport is going to be... Maybe I should get another tire...

    So, I did this wrong?

    dsb, you are correct!

    You need a new tire.

    Try a tubular!

So, you're slating the poor chap for pointing out the difference in price when it turns out you bought the cheaper one anyway and it turns out you'll only be using it three times? Not only that you're now thinking you should've bought the dearer one. Do you really think a continental tyre isn't going to manage an arduous three days of cycling? I suspect the "rat" would have a different version of events your majesty.

    Wow... Did I deserve that?

The 'event' was no more or less than described in the original post...

I don't know that I was 'slating' anyone... That's a term I'm not familiar with...

' Not only that you're now thinking you should've bought the dearer one'... As I stated in my last post, had I been given the info at the time of purchase I _would_ have purchased the 'dearer one'...

I have no doubt that the tire will 'manage an arduous three days of cycling'... But if I'm inferring correctly, it is your opinion that there is no discernable performance difference between the two tires in question... If that is in fact true, then I have made a most egregious error in posting this exchange in a negative light because the 'Shop Rat' (not meant as a derogatory btw.) conferred upon me the only pertinent information, and by extension helped me make a wise decision to purchase the 'less dear' of the two...

In truth, I only posted the exchange because I was surprised by his nonchalance, and I thought it was somewhat humorous.

Apparently, I'm an ass ( or arse for Mr. Whang) and should keep my observations to myself... Sadly, that's not likely to happen, so I do apologize...

Amazingly, I was thinking that as I was typing! Don't you just love clincher vs. tubular threads.

I've used Ultrasports as commuting tires in the past. Not bad for the price, but I seem to remember paying something like $25 on sale at the local Performance store.

Reminds me of the time I went to one of my LBS and tried to order a pair of 32 hole Open Pro rims laced triple cross to Ultegra hubs only to be told "That's not how they build wheels anymore".
