Default Social Media and the "Inauthentic Happening"

So, after a recent crash, I had a lot of time to fall into the Instagram rabbit hole. Learned a few interesting things about marketing, hype, journalism and the intersection between all three. The gray/grey area. Few questions came up:

In this Social Media 2.0 (3.0?) Moment, how much influence can a PR firm manifest?
ECHOS | Public Relations and Brand Communications

How much does it cost a small Effbuilder to hire a PR firm which has BMW as a client?

When a partner at a PR firm blogs for the largest publication in an industry are the rules of journalism suspended because Instagram owns the content?
    https://instagram.com/p/0RA47MwkAp/?...y=bicyclingmag

Does Don Walker own the rights to the Rouge Roubaix Builders Challenge? (This is not a serious question)

    Related and tangential questions:

Did Kanye hear about Speedvagen and Argonaut through Vsalon?

    https://instagram.com/p/0nlE6iu8Ys/?...=chriskingbuzz

    http://manualforspeed.com/feature/reachforthedream/

That PR money seems to go a long way...

further tangential question: Have you ever seen an advertisement for an advertising firm? If they don't eat their own dog food, why should we? Hope your post-crash recovery goes apace.

Clinchers. Dude grabs the microphone, talks about justice and then puts on clinchers. They aren't even Veloflex.

The MFS Kanye thing and the Kasual Klub are attempts at using humor to sell product.

Last year they raised a huge stink about not getting press credentials at a major race. I found out today that one of them was recently arrested for crashing a UCI course under the guise of "journalism." But MFS's thing seems to be to insert themselves into the story. Gonzo journalism, marketing to sell more swag, or the same fake it til you make it attitude that a lot of guys have fresh out of UBI?

I took to Twitter today to find out what their deal is, journalism or sales:

    MFS1.jpg
    MFS2.jpg
    MFS3.jpg

    As I suspected, humorless.

I read the "just a guy" comment as the messenger wanting to be the message.
For all the space shit they plaster on things, you'd think they'd realize how small they are.

I unabashedly like MFS even if I find so much of it over the top and ridiculous.
I love seeing coverage of bike racing and bikes in general that combines passion and high energy with out being reverential. I really can't take any more of the "Bikes are precious" thing.

Why do people feel the need to list all of their bikes in their signature?

I'm behind the people behind MFS, but I'm not behind the direction they've taken it. I agree with Chase on this. Was a better outfit when the point was interesting race coverage rather than rainbows shooting out of unicorns eyes from outer space.

The Speedvagen paint treatment is pretty sweet looking. But one hype + one hype does need equal two hypes. It equals garage queen.

Blow up and pin a picture of M. Bartoli on your wall. When you achieve that position, stop. Until then, stretch, ride, stretch, ride, eat less, and ride more.
