    Default So Beautiful...

From Dario Pegoretti's FB page. I mean, this is stunning work. The guy may have the hands of a framebuilder..but his soul is that of the Artist. Bravo.

Why do people feel the need to list all of their bikes in their signature?

He'd taken a pause in posting pictures of new frames, but I noticed he posted a number of new ones today. He had a green paint scheme that was beautiful and I don't normally like green frames.

As someone in the queue for an MxxxxxO, it's sweet torture watching, waiting.

    This one:

I love his free-form "stucco" panels. Like, a lot:

Oof. Like the paintings at a doctor's office. Sorry, I know enough about art to roll my eyes. Then again, I like Damien Hirst.

Whether you like the aesthetics of his paint schemes or not, I give Dario credit for pushing the boundaries on what a "proper" bike is supposed to look like.

The stucco panels and the Along Came a Spider really speak to me. The paint in the OP......it hasn't clicked yet. As Lewis Moon stated before, Thomas Kincaid must be responsible for the remaining 99% of the red/white/black market.

Is the Pegoretti finish smooth to the touch or can you feel the paint lines with your fingernails?

Well, exactly. If you have to "get art" whatever the frick that means then I guess you need to get art...but DP not only pushed the boundaries - with the idea of Hits and Misses built in - but there's lot going on in his painting that finds a surprising and unexpected canvas for expression; round steel tubes. That panel pic I op'd just has a lot going that is pleasing to my little eye what with the colors, textures, motif(s), etc... I'm sure he could knock off a few Hirstean squished flys on those tubesets, since apparently those are Art?

I agree with chancerider in that Dario's choice of canvas (i.e. round steel tubes) is what makes his work compelling. Whether a bike can be art is a question for another day, which isn't to say a functional object cannot be held in the highest regard as exceptional craft. (For example, many of the functional objects created at the Bauhaus meet that criteria.) As for Hirst, just a bundle of ego and marketing. I wouldn't tarnish a beautiful Pegoretti steel frame with his doodling.

I'm an artist and I like it. The artist is the only one who "gets it", the rest either like it or dislike it...
My take is, Dario's paint removes the typical rigidity and seriousness out of a well executed bike frame. BTW...davids' bike (and the whole paint scheme) is stunning.

Find me some bad clams and I'll oblige... Sorry.

I just find Dario's art uninteresting- it doesn't challenge my idea of bicycle aesthetics in a way that makes me uncomfortable, it just doesn't interest me. The paint doesn't seem to be saying much. It's like free jazz- I understand the deliberate crossing of boundaries as an intellectual exercise, but I don't feel the need to listen to it. Except Pegoretti paint jobs also seem deliberately apolitical, non-confrontational, and inoffensive. Everything about it tells me that Pegoretti wants to cultivate an impression in people's minds of himself as a wild, wine drinking, jazz listening artist, without doing anything to upset any of his well heeled clients. Not to knock his craftsmanship, which I admit is impeccable. I'm sure they're great bikes for the people who ride them, but they sure turn me off. On the other hand, Dario's American analog E-Richie has got the aesthetic dialed: a red bike.

I would bet a lot of money that in 50 years his bikes will be viewed as classic art and will cost a fortune!
