Default shit doesnt last forever thread

forced by the fork snapping off on a friend of mines bike throwing him and a few compatriots down and busting some of his ribs.

lucky in many ways, they were going slowly at the time. i was not on this ride myself.

the bike was probably 15 years old.. a nice quality handbuilt lugged steel frame.
his only bike... probably has close to 100k miles on it.
he's a big guy and very strong.

    remember:
shit doesnt last forever no matter how expensive it was when you bought it.
this goes for the parts hanging on the thing also.
use some common sense and throw for a new bike once in awhile if you ride it a lot.
its your friends that you put at risk when you try to get the last 100 miles out of some worn out pos.

and pull the fork ( any fork ) out every year or 2 and inspect it... nothing worse that a busted fork.

Point well taken! Just curious, steel fork or carbon? Where did it fail?

    excellent heads up, steve.
i had a ron cooper that must have had about 100k on it.
i sent it in for a repaint and to have some minor dents fixed.
turns out there was a crack in one of the fork tubes just below the crown.
no sign of it until the old paint was removed.
guy working on it said it could have gone at any moment.

Richard, that shot is precious. It reminds me a bit the character Dave (Dennis Christopher) in Breaking Away.

SteveP gave me this same advice about relationships. Turn her over every few years and check for new cracks.
    Just sayin'.
